GILGIT: Efforts to foster sectarian harmony in Gilgit geared up on Thursday as a group of lawyers took out a peace rally in the violence-hit town. The rally started from Benazir Chowk and culminated at City Park, with lawyers and some civil society activists carrying banners inscribed with slogan for establishing peace and sectarian harmony in Gilgit. The rally turned into a seminar when it reached City Park, with some senior lawyers urging the government to “establish its writ” in the region to avoid recurrence of violence. “Since peace is a need of everyone we should all be part of the process,” said a lawyer at the rally. Gilgit Deputy Commissioner Arkam Tariq said that to revive confidence among the people and to promote sectarian harmony, the government is encouraging such peace rallies and gatherings of mixed sects in the town.
