Gilani also handed over regular appointment letters to employees of Capital Development Authority (CDA), Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTCL) and the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
Speaking to a charged crowd during the May Day function at the Convention Centre Islamabad, he also announced an increase in death grants for labourers from Rs150,000 to Rs500,000 and an increase in their children's wedding allowance from Rs70,000 to Rs100,000.
The prime minister also directed the ministry concerned to announce Labour Policy 2012 and Implementation Commission of Industrial Relations Act (IRA-2012).
He said that imperialistic forces exploited labourers and workers but despite all their revengeful policies the labour community could not be oppressed.

@Mwaqar: no more rhetoric please!! you didn't provide any solution....God will not send his angles to take care of this situation neither will we see any miracle..... I know a solution and its right there in front of me. Am doing everything to prop it up....i only look for 2 qualities in any person i want to have any association with...he has to have honesty & trustworthiness i.e. saadiq & ameen. I can only see 1 person who has this quality and people who call him a liar , hypocrite or else...i challenge them on this platform to achieve just a small percentage of what he has achieved in his life for Pakistan....i challenge anyone who are married and have kids, leave your family and go and do something for your country....get humiliated in public, get punched by the youth, get locked up......i can't do all those things but at least i don't mock him and I don't doubt his sincerity...I support Imran Khan!
Dear PM! Please ask one of ur child that what are their daily expenses then u will know that how stupid u were when u announcing wages only 7000 for whole family for a month ....
@ufaquarian: I 100 % agree that 8000RS is nothing in present day economy,but then you need a revolution to change everything in the land of pure where corruption is like a chronic disease and politicians and other elite club members are the only one who are suffering of this corruption cancer,its mostly everyone,so change the system first,no matter its Nawaz,Zardari or Imran,they are all hypocrite,you need a new strong revolutionary leader who can change everything in the land of pure.
You can tell;election is approaching.
it's too much of a raise. Abdul Shakoor, the employee would like to give our Prime Minister 2000 ruppess with a message that can't be passed through sensor board of ET.
disappointed to read that 32% people believe Rs. 8,000 is adequate. please put yourselves in their shoes and see how you can survive in Rs. 8,000/month.
Regards Umair
@Walayat Malik:
i beg to differ with you....when you take economic factors i.e. CPI inflation, RPI, money circulation, direct & indirect taxes, interest rates into consideration you will find that this paltry sum of Rs1000 or 2000 will not make much dent to people's miseries .. the way govt is printing money day in day out ( Rs 6 billion every day) and this is been going on for quite some time now..No wonder! dollar has surged 50 % against Rs in last 4 years.....and yet people are reluctant to talk about it.....This money printing is the root cause of all evil...if you have any doubts...go and read "When money Dies" by Adam Fergusson..just to give you a flavour what it means for now and what it will look like in few years time - if we elect the same parliament in next election.
according to SBP, govt borrows Rs 6 billion a day....that's 30 billion a week, 130 billion a month and Rs 1560 billion a year. Do you receive any benefits from the Govt? I don't. . so where does this all money go. As we all know that the incumbent govt's nick name is corruption...convert those figures in to dollars. say @ exchange rate of Rs100.. we will get the following
1 day = Rs 6 billion will be $60 million ( sounds familiar!! humm) 1 week = Rs30 billion will be approx $300 million 1 month = Rs 130 billion will be $1.3 billion 1 year = Rs 1560 billion will be $15.6 billion.....
and yet we have established anchors and analysts who brag about the disappearance of $60 million dollars from Swiss banks but don't realize that the same person is stealing more than that every single day under our noses!!!
this money printing will eventually lead to hyperinflation and to sum it all up if the present political set up continues, the day isn’t far when YOU & I will be queuing up on a tandoor to get couple of rotis with a briefcase full of money.....
Well lets not forget the fact that Pakistan depends on foreign aid,also how many Pakistanis pay their INCOME TAX honestly?You need a system like U.S. or European where citizens do their part by paying INCOME TAX honestly and the Govt do their welfare,so we can criticize any Govt of Pakistan but in if in the land of pure where you have over 50 million illiterate people,and millions of people and feudal and hypocrite elite don't pay INCOME TAX honestly then you cant pay your poor labors more then 8000 Rs.
Mr. Prime Minister (convicted):
During your tenure you have increased the salaries of government servants by many fold but you did not increased the wages of a common man last year.
Now you have increased Rs.1000 per month for a labourer to earn Rs.8,000 per month.
Due you think that either you or your Federal Finance Minister who make and announce the Federal Budget of the country every year can make the budget of a common man having a family of six people and the sole bread earner that he can manage to meet his end needs in just Rs.8,000 per month?
Due to your political party's policies for the poor people and common man, the social inequality, injustice and crimes in the country have been raised by many folds.
Oh well, something is better then nothing you know .
No matter what the motive behind these actions, the announcement is highly welcome news for labourers. This is the advantage of democracy that near the election or otherwise, incumbent govt always does something good for the people.
Yes good step, we have a very good printing machine
Good news for the poor. Lets hope local administrations make sure it is enforced.
@imran: quoting ex PM Gilani
" I am a PM not a peon."
Thanks Mr.Prime Minister for increaseing in minimum wages of labourers from Rs7,000 to Rs8000. I want to know anybody in Pakistan make MONTHLY HOME BUDGET of 5 mebers family in RS.8000/=?
Buying votes/popularity with government money
What a joke!
"Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani" is this a country or a bollywood movie?
Do you have the Authority to do that Mr. Gilani ?
you have got to be joking, 1000? can our 'king of democracy' spent their whole month in 8000?
Lol as elections are approaching they know announcing these gimmicks! I hope the public can see through it!
May I know what is aim of this government, Do we have any policy for these so called democratic political parties? What are they aiming to achieve that they want to have their rule?. There are more than a dozen problems the country is facing .. and non of those problems are on their priority list neither they have given their voters any blue print for what they will do to solve those problems e.g Educational policy, Implementation of single curriculum, broadening tax net, their projects to over come load shedding, any housing societies in all major cities as not a single office goer can imagine buying their house anymore, controlling Western border, repatriation of refugees, development in northern areas and many more
