Dr Abdul Qayyum had been missing since July 27, the day of his son’s wedding. “He went out in the morning to get breakfast and never came back,” said Dr Mueed Qayyum, his son.
Since then, he said, the family had organised protests in Islamabad, Lahore and Rahim Yar Khan for his release, and thanked the media for reporting on the demonstrations. They also filed a case at the Islamabad High Court, which ordered the intelligence agencies to produce the detainee on May 14.
He said that he was phoned by an intelligence official on April 26 and told to stay at home to receive his father, who was returned the day after.
Amna, Dr Qayyum’s daughter, said that her father had been barely able to speak since his return because he had been mentally and physically tortured during detention. He told them that he had been kept blindfolded in detention.
The family thanked the judiciary, especially the Supreme Court, for pushing for Dr Qayyum’s return. They also thanked the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and civil society for giving them the courage to raise their voice against the illegal detention.
The dental surgeon was allegedly detained and investigated because of suspected links to Hizbut Tahrir. He was allegedly picked up within two weeks of the arrest of Brig Ali Khan of the Pakistan Army, who was later convicted of links to HT, which is banned in Pakistan.
The family acknowledges having links with the HT. Dr Qayyum’s brother was also allegedly illegally detained for two years for his ties to the HT, said family members and their neighbours.

Dr. Sahib, May Allah (swt) reward you for the trauma that you have gone through. The secular western puppets should know that they can not extinguish the light of Allah (swt) by using all these evil and barbaric tactics, Allah (swt) will prevail his deen even if they dislike it.
Get well soon as the Ummah badly needs people like you!!!!!
@Local Correspondent: Indeed its not a justification of mistakes that you made in this report!
@Sick&Tired of Pak:
If he was guilty or have done anything wrong, then goverment wouldnt have abducted him like THUGS and CRIMINALS.... You should avoid giving single liners and check ground reality before passing forged statements....
The agencies fierce hostility is not directed at Blackwater or the CIA but at Muslims whose only crime is to call for the Khilafah, to implement Islam as a rule, unify the entire Ummah as one state and eradicate the domination of the American and British colonialists in Muslim Lands.
All those people correcting story must contribute when they had been asked. People are coward by nature. When family and the sibilings have been inquired, it had been informed that no body is at home. Judiciary has dared to order them to put the missing persons on the board. Can you do it alone, say honestly? If there is no problem with the victim, how he had covered a long distance of bahawalpur to rahim yar khan?
Intelligence agencies took people when they had sufficient proof for investigations and they are professionals and not dealing like thugs and goons.
Positive side should be appreciated and media has not free time to keep on portraying the everything. Its media of Pakistan who had supported judiciary and had done thousands of programs only on missing people.
Regards, Critic.
You don't wanna be missing, dont keep contacts with banned outfits..simple!! I condemn illegal detention though.. strict laws should be made and people who are suspected of links should be legally arrested
Detainee's Family & article confirmed that Doc was having links with HT.It means he was a terrorist.
@Release Dr Abdul Qayyum: The article also confirms links with HT.....that's true, right?
Its a misery in Pakistan that Justice department is so weak that cant punish the white color criminals like Dr Abdul Qayyum. There is no option other then to keep such terrorist. Like this at least for a short time people are saved from such people. I hope CJ of Pakistan should be as much active to punish such criminals as much he is doing to release them.
Thanks to Tribune for coverage!
I'm amazed at credit being given to High Court and Supreme Court, these courts are good for nothing but giving dates and further dates.
Civil/Military leadership is responsible for these inhumane abduction & torture!
I usually laugh at the idea of global khilafat, but this is wrong; state cannot arrest people without warrant and mistreat them
My God.... no phone call received nor media gave importance to this hot issue..... it seems how media manipulates our views.. :( :(
Dr. Qayyum is our hero :)
Get your facts right before you write a news item .It is un professional. Yes He is back Alhamdulillah. But all the other things are not correct .
Mashallah very good news :)
Alhmdulilah he is back, was so worried for him
This is wholly inaccurate. He was abducted at gunpoint at just before midnight on the 27th of July 2012 whilst with his 11 year old daughter, not in the morning. The media have been very silent, only a few reporting our protests. There was no phone call about his return. This is fabricated. Dr Abdul Qayyum was dumped near Bahawalpur exactly nine months after being brutally kidnapped and being kept in solitary confinement. Our judiciary have been useless, adjourning hearing after hearing and torturing our family by keeping us waiting. They have not shown any regard for the justice they claim to uphold.
Shoddy journalism, full of fabrication and lies.
Lies Lies and More Lies Please show the true picture. Shame on you tribune
You'd have thought they would reserve this sort of treatment for those who are looting the country! Ya Allah kiya banay ga hamara?
We love Dr. Abdul Qayyum. He is my dentist. Alhmdulilah he is back. May god keep him safe
His ajar is with Allah swt. Kiyani in his support for Americans and using intelligence agencies to harm own citizens has left Musharraf to shame.
Pakistan is a Muslim country and asking for Islamic rule peacefully is right of every Pakistani Muslim. Hizb utTahrir is persecuted for what?
This illegal cowardly detainment (if that's what we can call it- kidnapping is more suitable) is a sign of the weak pathetic nature of the Pakistani puppets and elites controlling our country.
Groups like Hizb ut tahrir exist for a reason, because there is a sincere element of opposition in Pakistan that wants to see change according to Islamic values, they want these spineless lackeys gone and a real system of governance devoid of American influence to be established. And this is being done via a non violent method, so the Pakistani authority do not have any grounds to arrest these activists.
Many things mentioned in this article are NOT true which are clarified below: 1. Dr.Abdul Qayyum was illegally abducted just before midnight on 27th July 2011, when he was coming back from the bakery with his 11 year old daughter not ‘MORNING’. 2. Except few newspapers most of the media didn’t report our protests, press conferences and press releases. And it shows how free our Pakistani media is! 3. We received NO phone call one day before his release; he was dumped on 27th April 2012 near Bahawalpur exactly after nine months of inhumane solitary confinement. 4. I am sorry to say our Judiciary is not independent at all, they just kept adjourning hearing making us wait for the next hearing. Where does the JUSTICE lie?
