IPL: Pietersen piles ton of misery on Deccan

Batsman cracks 103*, helps Delhi to 5-wicket win in IPL

Kevin Pietersen’s whirlwind hundred helped Delhi Daredevils to a five-wicket win in the Indian Premier League (IPL), also ensuring that Deccan Chargers remained winless in the tournament so far.

Pietersen came to the crease after Delhi, in pursuit of 158, lost their opener in the first over. They were then reduced to 23 for three but the England international ensured that Delhi were able to cross the finish line in the final over.

The right-hander hit nine sixes and six fours in his 64-ball knock, adding 42 with Ross Taylor before putting on a 49-run stand with Irfan Pathan. A 48-run unbroken partnership with Yogesh Nagar was enough to leave Deccan still searching for their first win in the tournament after four matches.

Dale Steyn picked up two for 19, while Veer Pratap Singh and Daniel Christian took a wicket apiece but the rest of the bowlers failed miserably to defend the total.

Earlier, Shikhar Diwan and Parthiv Patel added 71 for the second wicket to help Deccan post a reasonable total. After the dismissal of Kumar Sangakkara in the third over, the duo took the score to 81 before Deccan lost their way. Morne Morkel and Shahbaz Nadeem providing regular breakthroughs, Deccan found it hard to accelerate. Morkel and Nadeem claimed three wickets each and were able to restrict Deccan to less than 160.
