LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court on Wednesday directed IG Habibur Rehman to issue a list of deputy superintendents of Police (DSPs) ranking them in order of seniority, in line with orders of the Supreme Court and High Court.

Chief Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed issued these directions while hearing a contempt of court petition moved against the IG by two DSPs who claim to have been denied due promotion to the rank of SP.

On Wednesday, IG Rehman said that the issue had been raised in the Supreme Court and the LHC should defer the case till the SC’s decision. The chief justice did not agree and sought a seniority list of DSPs. He said an aggrieved person could move a service tribunal against a seniority list.

The counsel for the petitioners, DSP Mariam Naheed of Faisalabad traffic police and Sheikhupura DSP Aslam, said that the Police Department was refusing to promote his clients on the grounds that they did not have two years of field experience, when this was not even a requirement for promotion. He said his clients had been due for promotion to SP for several years.
