Youth Olympics team prepare for Singapore

A 26-member Pakistan contingent is set to leave for Singapore on August 10 for the first Youth Olympics.

LAHORE: A 26-member Pakistan contingent is set to leave for Singapore on August 10 for the first Youth Olympics.

Iqtidar Naseer Ahmed will be leading the squad while Pakistan Judo Federation Secretary-General Masood Ahmed will serve as the administrative officer. Pakistan will participate in four disciplines that include hockey, swimming, taekwondo and weightlifting.

Hockey is the only discipline that has cleared the qualifying rounds in order to participate. Ghulam Muhammad, who will be part of the swimming category, Maham Aftab for Taekwondo, and Irfan Butt for the weight lifting genre will be participating on the wild card entry system that will be contested among players aged under 18.

During the event, which starts from August 13, Naseer intends to plant a tassel as a token of appreciation for the Olympic Council of Asia to not only allow Pakistan to participate in this event, but also for helping the development of budding athletes.

“The players are ambassadors of the country and will convey the message that even in this crucial time for Pakistan,” said Masood. “The players are fully committed to do their level best and to produce best results in the event.”
