It has been over three days since a huge wall of snow crashed into a Pakistan Army camp in the Giari area near Siachen Glacier, and military officials saw grim prospects of recovering even a single survivor.
Around 124 troops from the 6 Northern Light Infantry Battalion and 11 civilians have been buried under 80 feet of snow since Saturday morning.
Specially-trained search-and-rescue teams of army engineers equipped with locating gadgets and heavy machinery joined rescue units aided by sniffer dogs and helicopters.
But bad weather hampered efforts to boost the search despite the arrival of US high altitude specialists in Islamabad.
“With every passing day, hope is fading away for survivors,” an army official at the rescue site said.
Amidst fading hopes new concerns emerged for the rescuers: Ensuring physical safety of the bodies frozen in the snow as bulldozers and excavators dug through the debris in search of survivors.
“The absence of human tracing censors is causing a major problem in locating bodies,” another army officer told The Express Tribune requesting anonymity.
“This delay in removing the snow, slush, boulders and mud is causing another grave concern: Possible desecration of the bodies during the cutting of snow with the blades of the bulldozers.”
Late on Monday, weather conditions turned for the worse with the Meteorological Department forecasting more snowfall for Tuesday.
Rescue updates
According to a military update on the rescue operation, 286 soldiers and 60 civilians along with bulldozers and JCB heavy equipments (used for digging) have been employed at the site.
The team has been able to clear one platform measuring 40 feet in length, 30 feet in width and 10 feet deep so far, said a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations.
While speaking to The Express Tribune, an army officer said five helicopters were taking part in the operation and heavy machinery and technical experts from the NDMA and Strategic Plans Division have also been flown from Islamabad to the site. However, the official added that the helicopter service was not very effective because of the inclement weather.
International help
Switzerland and Germany, meanwhile, decided to send experts to Pakistan to assist with the rescue operation. According to diplomatic sources, the Swiss government is sending a team of three avalanche experts and a sniffer dog.
Another source said that the German government has offered assistance to dig out the buried soldiers. China, on the other hand, offered condolences over the tragic incident.

dont have words.May Allah rest them in peace . though i hope and pray for survivors. who is to blame and who is responsible. i dont know really
@Kanwal: Which army you are talking about? How our technical knowledge army could not find Osama Bin Laden for many years near to their own cantonment? How our intelligent army failed in containing the terrorists in almost all the places? How our army lost all the wars? Why Mehran incident happened? Is it not the same army which killed Zulfikar and Benazir Bhuttos? Is it not our great army which eliminated Bugti in cold blood?
ppl like Azaad khan and some others with little technical knowledge but big mouths amaze me. Sweetheart pakistan army engineers are not idiots and they certainly know better than you about the handling of Attabad lake and other such cases. please state ur qualifications first before critisizing the armymen so that we actually know the expert opinion is coming from an expert who would have actualy done better than them if given a chance.
@Azaad Khan: dear, you are deliberately destroying the morale of Army in the time of their grief, if you are Pakistani i would request you to forget your grievances and support Army as some of your relatives might be serving. if you are indian the in the name of humanity i will say this is not the time to rejoice as your troops are also in the way of same danger on the other side of Giyari mountain. We must pray for them and their families.
Not much hope is expected if Pak Army is involved. The way they mismanaged the Attabad lake in Hunza. Had they any wisdom, they should not have let the lake to swell so much in the beginning by expanding the spill way and removing any debris that was blocking the path of the water. It was very easy at that time. Their inability to decided on time and delaying habits caused the lake to swell to this dangerous level that has destroyed so many villages and has now become a threat to lower areas in the way of Indus river.
I am sure their similar procrastinating habits and being scared to death to make any decision would take the lives of the all personnel buried down there. It must not have been so difficult, but from the previous example we could easily understand why Pak Army will never manage to handle this or any other issue of emergency in time.
the express tribune service is very useful to all busy persons than others
Why not to have a pact over all the borders. I mean it's ok to have forces and atomic weapons in the current global scenario. But what's the point having mini-war conditions on the borders all the time? Keep shouting Pakistan Zindabad, Jai Hind, fight each other like mad dogs and you'll receive nothing but the gifts of corpses. Come on guys, enough, stop it. World laughs at both of you! There is no pride at all, nothing heroic in fighting at world's highest battlefield in the inhuman weather conditions... It's insane!!!
Back off please back off. Jis ne wahan qabza kr k 8000 feet height k glacier pe -70 temperature mein jo Shakira ka concert krwana hai krwa le. LAASHEN BHEJNA BAND KARO
sad to see people bickering about Pakistan foreign policy when the real issue is the trapped soldiers.
@A. Khan: Basically, the technical term for this type of occurring is MUD SLIDE. Avalanches comprise of snow and with it boulders and mud comes but what happened here was the sudden excessive rain which initiated the rocks to give way and the mud and snow came along in shape of Gravel. The camp was sighted perfectly keeping in view the fall of snow and avalanches, this phenomena at this height never happened before with such magnitude as it climbed the opposite slope being water based. Snow and avalanches can't climb up slope but water based mud slide can. Now as for as the survival rate in this occurrence is concerned that is minimal but we still pray from God for a miracle.( Ameen)
@Baloch: They'd probably end up with cabin fever if they didn't.
There's no Muslim ummah on the face of the planet please ! Before muslim it takes a human to come forward for helping the distressed. We should first grasp the concept of humanity as being pompous of our religiosity would do us no good if we are unable learn to be human.
Lets All Pray for their Lives, this is atleast we all can do for them.
only a country full of dumb heads can afford to maintain such a costly adventure field. It has no economic benefit to us, and costing us millions of dollars per day, and also the precious lives of young people.
Serves Pak well. Deserves no sympathy. Killing so many of other countries. Poking its nose in affairs of many others and causing loss, pain and distress.
So according to the comments we must remain friends with only those countries who offer us aid. It seems like a country could have the same interests or the similar goals but until you give us any aid you wont get Pakistan's public approval.
@Basit: you meant to say China doesn't have the resource and technology!!!, which world you are living - because recently China have completed the world highest rail route in Tibet region with snow fall, America have always helped in Pakistan's natural calamity, so please go and see how much each country have donated for Pakistan so far and you will know the truth - friendship must be for equal respect but China is using Pakistan only to counter India...by the way develop your country and never depend on others for relief efforts in natural calamity and this will bring respect to your country...
Please get help and save solgers/civilans also get experience of rescue but decision should be intime.
lol
There is very little chance of survival after 3 hours let alone a few days because the carbon dioxide from exhalation builds up very fast in the confined space.
@Salman: Chinese are downright cold, selfish and business minded people who only back Pakistan on political front and no further which they do because of the strategic compulsion of regional rivalry with upcoming India firmly backed by US.
Looking at this from another angle, and rather than criticizing the president for going to India, I think this is a very opportunity for Pakistan and India to realized that there is no point in fighting for these barren peaks covered with snow. The issue should be resolved as soon as possible and by negotiations. There is no pride in saying that we are fighting a war on the highest battlefield when the country is starving.
Why zardari's visits outside Pakistan are at times of Nation's clamaty? What is wrong with this dude - not a sinlge statement from president/prime ministers office?
mr.hu jintaoo. what u mean of disputed area, first by saying it disputed area,ur endorsing india point,as before 1984,siachen was inside pak territory in international map.and even in disputed region Humantarian resue work is prohibited according to chinese law?
@Mard-e-Haq: Alas! some friendships are higher than the oceans and deeper than the Himalayas.
basit@babloo, its now time to be realistic, china is no more all weather ally,so far there is continuous violence and no economic development in our country, china WITHDRAWS from GWADAR itself, to please India and america,,china means business, and nothing else
As matter stands, there is no hope even to get the dead bodies. Many victims are from AJK & GB areas where poverty forced them to join armed forces which posted them in death traps.
@Mard-e-Haq Absolutely right. Now where are our Chinese friends and Muslim Umma in this plight.
Pak - China friendship is all tested and it's absolutely no comparison of it from others, China itself don't have that expertise, the Austrians, Swedish, Swiz and alike have more expert in this field than even US. Since these above mentioned countries have sky resorts, and every now or then they go through it.
It's rubbish to even pin point China relation in it.
I wish, hope and pray that our people use more of their brain cells and less of the emotional part and television support to make their judgement on and off-air
May Allah bless the families of these brave soldiers and grant them courage to bear this tragedy..(Ameen)
Since last three days I dont have the courage to.face this devastating truth. What I care about is loss of human lives on so many fronts.... I hope India and Pakistan just get over now and come to peace. It is simply ridiculous to waste resources and human lives in a harsh place like Siachen. We have so many other fronts to fight on....common govts. and armies!!!!!!!!
China on the other hand offered condolences. So much for Pak-Cheen dosti!
@Basit You have no clue as to how much China helps behind the scenes unlike the US which creates a photo session out of any and all events. The Chinese are a lot more low key and secretive as it is their culture.
What gives you the impression that the Chinese do not have expertise in snow avalanche rescue? They have an extremely capable mountain warfare division.
You definitely seem to be privy to top secret Chinese 'secret' help. Will the government now arrest you for leaking secret information on the internet?
@Basit: What is wrong with you? Kindly forget your tirade against "liberals" and pray for the soldiers. We all are on the same side.
@A. Khan
I think you need to go there and then decide where to build the base camp. Try using a canon blast yourself. This base camp was more than 20 years old.
@Basit: im not a liberal but even im amazed at behavior of chinese who are supposed to be our friends.do you remember how much aid they offered us during floods?compare that with how much america has helped us.even india had offered more aid money than china.we are ungrateful people and have always failed to recognize our well wishers.do you remember the american help during kashmir earthquake?
@Mard-e-Haq: Trying to bait Pakistanis won't work. Soldiers have died during a tragedy and you are trying to score points for India? Shame on you. The US and the Europeans have the expertise to help with this type of disaster- after all it happens in those countries with some frequency. Try simple logic but I suppose your real intention is not to logically look at things but to inflame people. Sorry it won't work. I am sure China would help too if it had the means and expertise.
can't blame china. higher than Himalaya cannot contain siachen since its disputed area. we will again say pak-china friendship is higher than himalaya (not siachen) deeper than ocean.
@Max: I agree about the video the questioning of the wife and mother was cruel . The father was tough and held his own.Over all i agree take it off.
@Basit, yes l;ike the secretaive power stations china has built in pakistan which provide free electrical power to pakistan. Its shameful the way Pakistan grovels before china.
@Mard-e-Haq: The country with the expertise in rescue in snow avalanche will send the experts or is that too hard of an idea to grasp? You have no clue as to how much China helps behind the scenes unlike the US which creates a photo session out of any and all events. The Chinese are a lot more low key and secretive as it is their culture.
salam to all.i m very sad to know about this tragedy may Allah help our soldiers who put their efforts and even their life for us and our country.we are with our army.may allah blessed them.
Liberals and their Indian allies will ask why China is not helping? Simple answer, China doesn't have the expertise in this type of event. But this logic is too hard for liberals and Indians to grasp.
My heart goes to the families. What a loss? Please take off that video of Maj. Haq's family being interviewed. The families of the soldiers are going through very tough time and I hope the ET respects their privacy. Thank you,
Thank you our "friends" Muslim countries and China. We can't b;ame you when our own president leaves the country without asking world for help.
Continuously praying for them!!!!!
I repeat again, questions need to be asked about site chosen for base headquarters. Even if there was no better location, then a close watch needs to be kept on build up snow on adjoining peaks. This build up should have been released using cannon fire before it reached dangerous levels. Pakistan Army cannot be that short of ammunition.
Someone has been very negligent and over 100 human beings have lost their lives. I hope someone is held responsible for this criminal negligence.
So much for all-weather friends. Such "friendship" can't weather Himalayan glaciers. China just want Pakistanis to be mere security guards for its Himalayan frontiers. Even India has offered to help Pakistan, such during the earthquakes and floods of the past 10 years. Unpalatable truth for many fellow Pakistanis.
The United States has offered help as well and our mullahs want jihad against the West.
