After an impressive show by the bowlers who restricted Pune to a modest 129 for nine, Mumbai faltered in their chase and finished on 101 for nine with Ashok Dinda claiming four wickets. James Franklin and Dinesh Karthik added 49 for the fourth wicket but once that partnership was broken, Mumbai lost the plot.
They lost their last seven wickets for 47 runs with Murali Karthik also chipping in with a couple of wickets. It was a contrasting display from their show against defending champions Chennai Super Kings where they easily overhauled the 113-run target.
Earlier, Steven Smith hit a 32-ball 39 for the highest individual contribution in the low-scoring affair to enable Pune get close to the 130-run mark.
