Liberal and illiberal

Letter April 06, 2012
The religious extremists in Pakistan believe that they are the only ones in the right.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Jahanzaib Haque’s article of April 6 titled “No journalism free of bias”.

Taking a stand against homophobia, misogyny, religious intolerance and bigotry is a good thing. What The Express Tribune is doing is commendable and it should not be cowed down by the badgering of Zia’s children. Those who criticise the newspaper are those who are used to seeing only their version of what Pakistan should be like and they don’t take kindly to any alternative viewpoints. Such elements have no qualms in resorting to baseless attacks and accusations to weaken the resolve of those fighting for the rights of the victimised.

The self-righteousness of the conservative segments of Pakistani society is too evident in the invective hurled against those who speak in defence of religious minorities or for the cause of secularism. The religious extremists in Pakistan believe that they are the only ones in the right and harangue anyone who doesn’t agree with their views.
