Free laptops for Punjab students, now sold online
A report on the ProPakistani website has revealed that laptops handed out under the e-Youth Initiative program are now allegedly being sold on OLX.com.pk, a website used by buyers and sellers in Pakistan.
A quick search shows sellers pitching their wares stating that the laptop is from the Youth Initiative program and is being sold Rs8,000 to Rs10,000 lower than the market price. Users have also suggested that bargaining can bring the price down.
It has also been revealed that some machines are available at Hafeez Center in Lahore at a much lower price. Laptops are reportedly being sold for Rs20,000 and lower than market prices.
The provincial government has so far distributed thousands of laptops in different cities. Students have also complained that laptops are not being distributed on merit.
The Lahore High Court (LHC) recently directed the convener of the Youth Development Program investigate whether the laptops being distributed at Government University College (GCU) were on the basis of personal liking or merit.
Asghar Javed, a student of MPhil (Urdu) at GCU, filed a petition on Monday claiming that the laptops being distributed as a part of the program initiated by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif were not based on merit.

It was really good to distribute laptops to students but corruption also matters.. I was told by some one that the laptop real price was 35 to 40 thousand and they were buy at a price 75 to 80 thousand... well if there is poorness in country and ministers are giving pocketing money frm people and than distributing laptops way than surely this would happen that people will sell it because they want there money back from ministers. So no doubt this is a god idea and bad also...

I do not know how much Punjab govt paid for these laptops.Second thought which comes to mind is wether they are new or reconditioned.In developed world laptops have lost their glitter.Another innovative scam akin to Yellow cab and Sasti Roti by PMLN.

Basically and actually PML-N is increasing its votes' bank by giving laptops and especially PPP is increasing its votes' bank by giving Rs.1000/woman on the name of BISP by taking the loans from IMF and World Bank on heavy mark-ups. Both governments are making the biggest committed mistakes because thus by doing so poverty and common/poor man's problems and difficulties and expensiveness can never be reduced/decreased.
Actions depend on Intentions. Sharif brothers,distributed laptops in order for student to use it against Imran khan. But it seems that same laptops will be purchased and used against Sharif Brothers. Tuch tuch tuch. Actions depends on intentions.
That scheme was useless and was started witouht knowing the consequebces, This money could be used for other development purpose,who wha the main actor behind this project should know that youth does not need/deserve laptop,they are seeking bread and butter. Only PHD should be granted this machine.It should be stopped immediately and accountablity must be started,thos have sold should be punished or at least should have been a criteria that student desrves or not. CM, Punjab, kindly give attention at school level,where things are worst and getting out of control.You can produce good citizens only if schooling is ideal.

Its really unfortunate. But the fact should also be kept in mind that ever increasing inflation and poverty has made peoples life miserable.There had been reports about people selling their children because of extreme poverty so what to talk about laptops!!!!!

@Afzal Ahmed: Perhaps you have no idea about how students in the West also cheat the government but no one blames the government for doing things in good faith. There will always be cheats. I went to university in Canada with a government grant- just so you know, some kids use the government school / college/ university grant which is meant for studies but instead cheat by using it to buy cars, clothes etc. This is not allowed. The students with low interest loans would cheat and not repay the taxpayers loans. This is not only common in Canada but also in the UK. It doesn't mean that the government should stop trying to help needy students. Cheating is cheating whether it is done in a developing country like Pakistan or in a developed country like Canada.
Even the US government cannot provide free laptops that Paunjab government can provide. I am impressed. Can I get one for free or do I have to buy it online at a discount ?

@Umar: You are negating your own reasoning in your comment, first you say who wants to keep a laptop with SS picture on it, and then at the same time you say who would not sell that laptop, now tell me if no one wants to keep laptop with SS picture then it means there is no buyer available so how can one sell that.
this was expected, its useless to distribute laptops to those who are already craving for food and don't have electricity at their homes.
This had to happen - if laptops of stone age are distributed in an age even children can differentiate between a junk laptop and real laptop.
How much was eaten up under the garb of donating laptops to the position holders by the team headed by the Grand Khadim Sahab will be unearthed someday - a new test case for CJ to take notice of.
And for my dear Barooq Sahib!! Laptop doesn't mean everything - a machine made 10 years ago has no value today - if the position holders were to be honoured, they should have been given laptops worthy of their success rather than humiliating with laptops that cannot run programmes of the day.

Giving laptop to student is a good idea and it is useful in many ways. Blaming Sharif brothers for the actions of some unscrupulous students is not correct. Even if fifty percent use them to their advantage, the scheme is considered to be a success. Anything can be misused by anybody. In India, one state government has given cycles to the rural students to attend to the school. Of course, some students sold them. As usual, the opposition shouts as per their policy.

It would have been better and more beneficial for the students to receive cash instead of laptops. There would have been no waste and they would not need to do any hanky panky. However, by the laptop scheme the PML-N buyers got a hefty commission, the sellers are getting good commission/profits and the students are getting half or less. The money would have been better spent on the basic education on the poorest of the poor kids who have no resources to go to any college. But again like Yello Cabs, Banking schemes this is yet another feather in the cap of PML-N
why would anyone want a laptop with a picture of shahbaz shareef on it..... Who wouldn't sell it? If ur poor u need the money, and if ur not poor then u most likely have a laptop and wouldn't want a laptop with a pic of shareef on it. Its a smart move in my opinion.
@shami: well what is fault of that site? We should ban Sharifs and their family. They are wasting our tax money on their election campaign. This money should have been spent on free education for poor children but as children can't vote so Sharifs are giving laptops to get votes.

@Amjad: you can not compare Canada with Punjab... and in scholarships in US, UK and Canada government give stipend to poor people and stipend can be spent anywhree.. do you have shortage of electricity in Canada?? are there millions of poor people even can't have proper food? first provide essentials then luxuries.. its not fault of public, its fault of government.. if govt was so much in love with IT, they should have developed more computer labs in govt schools, colleges and unis that would have made this money asset of govt instead of a liability..

@khalid The laptops were given on merit which was determined by their academic performance. There was no test of the moral fortitude and well such a test would have been impossible anyway. Do you know when registering for the laptop, you have to declare that you don't already own a laptop and also it gives you option to voluntarily withdraw if you are a person of means ? how many students you thought actually gave a damn about that ? We are a nation of corrupt people. Can you please tell me in all honesty that on your laptop the operating system and software are purchased? We steal like its our birth right and 99% of the people with laptops are actually declaring that they bought the copy of Ms Word when they never did while installing. Everyone I know, and that includes me, have often tried to justify our own corruption with excuses but that was not the point. you can bash the significance or actual perceived benefit of the scheme and that is a valid debatable argument. But if a person decided to sell what was given to him by the government because he declared he needed it, its not the fault of the government. Open your eyes. Sharifs did great service to the nation..They provided this great tool of information to poor students free of cost. Now its students duty to get best out of it. The vote bank of Sharifs is intact and they will win majority very comfortabley. They don't need much help of our disoriented youth. If the government is trying to help students but the students themselves are abusing the facility, why blame the government? It's like here in Canada where poor students get access to government aid for college or university but some students abuse the facility and use the money for other purposes. But its not a laptop which they need , i had seen a report on t.v , in that report some student of raahim yar khan were selling these laptops , when the reporter ask that y they r selling these lappies , they said that they r so poor they even cant have money to continue their education , they also thanked for the laptops but they said that they dont need laptops but monetary assistance frm govt would be highly appreciated !!!! The distribution of laptops is just a kind of election campaign from Zalim-e- ala of Punjab. the problem is pml n is not taking pragmatic decisions. Just like sasti roti scheme they felt it would serve people but it backfired as it did not solve problems. Distribution of laptops does not solve the problems of youth. Now students have started asking questions whether these laptops delivered are on merit or not. Please have a look at the picture on this article, you will see that it's a screen shot of the ad from www.olx.com.pk Is that not enough evidence that these laptops are now being sold online? You can also visit Hafeez center in Lahore and ask the shop keepers there.

The question is that was a laptop a primary need of the people ? Though it aimed at encouraging students and appreciating them but looking at the big picture, it was nothing but a total waste of money and a scheme to get more votes!!! The money spent on this could have been spent on Dams or for making an industry which would in-turn increase the employment opportunities for the people!

This is a corrupt country, even if 50% of the laptops are retained by the students and utilized for their academic purposes, we should still consider it a success story.

The amount spend on purchase of laptops, could have been used to pay scholarships for university dues of deserving students.
