A report on the ProPakistani website has revealed that laptops handed out under the e-Youth Initiative program are now allegedly being sold on OLX.com.pk, a website used by buyers and sellers in Pakistan.
A quick search shows sellers pitching their wares stating that the laptop is from the Youth Initiative program and is being sold Rs8,000 to Rs10,000 lower than the market price. Users have also suggested that bargaining can bring the price down.
It has also been revealed that some machines are available at Hafeez Center in Lahore at a much lower price. Laptops are reportedly being sold for Rs20,000 and lower than market prices.
The provincial government has so far distributed thousands of laptops in different cities. Students have also complained that laptops are not being distributed on merit.
The Lahore High Court (LHC) recently directed the convener of the Youth Development Program investigate whether the laptops being distributed at Government University College (GCU) were on the basis of personal liking or merit.
Asghar Javed, a student of MPhil (Urdu) at GCU, filed a petition on Monday claiming that the laptops being distributed as a part of the program initiated by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif were not based on merit.

@ Barooq: Could'nt agree with you more. Brilliantly articulated.
this is nt fair to sale laptop.
It was really good to distribute laptops to students but corruption also matters.. I was told by some one that the laptop real price was 35 to 40 thousand and they were buy at a price 75 to 80 thousand... well if there is poorness in country and ministers are giving pocketing money frm people and than distributing laptops way than surely this would happen that people will sell it because they want there money back from ministers. So no doubt this is a god idea and bad also...
@Ch Allah Daad:
I like the way you abbreviate Chaudhry
Giving Laptops was a hair brained scheme just like Sasti Roti. People involved made millions and now Pakistan will have 125000 more porn watchers
@MAD: What blunder? Trying to help students who instead turn out to be thankless? I think the blunder is that students pretend to be deserving but have no character.
@Ch Allah Daad: Was this being given on merit? Oh come on, it was a mode of bribery. But as Abraham Lincoln once said: "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time." These students have realized that laptops wont bring any change. Laptops can be used for different things.
Bhai this is their property, they can do whatever they want with their property. This is a basic human right. Where are the NGO's?
Wese bhi they were probably using this to watch gandi films, so perhaps the money will help them in a better way.
These are seasoned politicians in Pakistan aka Third World. Read this. http://www.economist.com/node/21548933
I do not know how much Punjab govt paid for these laptops.Second thought which comes to mind is wether they are new or reconditioned. In developed world laptops have lost their glitter.Another innovative scam akin to Yellow cab and Sasti Roti by PMLN.
pmln will win next elections, ppp will be 2nd, Laptop scheme was better but bad people live in every society, scheme is better n it depends upon the students how they use it. Its like make or break situation for them.
Basically and actually PML-N is increasing its votes' bank by giving laptops and especially PPP is increasing its votes' bank by giving Rs.1000/woman on the name of BISP by taking the loans from IMF and World Bank on heavy mark-ups. Both governments are making the biggest committed mistakes because thus by doing so poverty and common/poor man's problems and difficulties and expensiveness can never be reduced/decreased.
Actions depend on Intentions. Sharif brothers, distributed laptops in order for student to use it against Imran khan. But it seems that same laptops will be purchased and used against Sharif Brothers. Tuch tuch tuch. Actions depends on intentions.
That scheme was useless and was started witouht knowing the consequebces, This money could be used for other development purpose, who wha the main actor behind this project should know that youth does not need/deserve laptop, they are seeking bread and butter. Only PHD should be granted this machine. It should be stopped immediately and accountablity must be started, thos have sold should be punished or at least should have been a criteria that student desrves or not. CM, Punjab, kindly give attention at school level, where things are worst and getting out of control. You can produce good citizens only if schooling is ideal.
Stupid move by Punjab govt, but not corrupt. It is always corruption in a educated common middle class people Shame on those people who blaming government but not on the people responsible for this .
Its really unfortunate. But the fact should also be kept in mind that ever increasing inflation and poverty has made peoples life miserable. There had been reports about people selling their children because of extreme poverty so what to talk about laptops!!!!!
I do not know how much Punjab govt paid for these laptops.Second thought which comes to mind is wether they are new or reconditioned. In developed world laptops have lost their glitter.Another innovative scam akin to Yellow cab and Sasti Roti.
As expected what you can say of pakistani DNA at work
@Afzal Ahmed: Perhaps you have no idea about how students in the West also cheat the government but no one blames the government for doing things in good faith. There will always be cheats. I went to university in Canada with a government grant- just so you know, some kids use the government school / college/ university grant which is meant for studies but instead cheat by using it to buy cars, clothes etc. This is not allowed. The students with low interest loans would cheat and not repay the taxpayers loans. This is not only common in Canada but also in the UK. It doesn't mean that the government should stop trying to help needy students. Cheating is cheating whether it is done in a developing country like Pakistan or in a developed country like Canada.
Even the US government cannot provide free laptops that Paunjab government can provide. I am impressed. Can I get one for free or do I have to buy it online at a discount ?
Hahaha...
The whole laptop issue was a gimmick by PMLN to get support of youth...
@Umar: You are negating your own reasoning in your comment, first you say who wants to keep a laptop with SS picture on it, and then at the same time you say who would not sell that laptop, now tell me if no one wants to keep laptop with SS picture then it means there is no buyer available so how can one sell that.
this was expected, its useless to distribute laptops to those who are already craving for food and don't have electricity at their homes.
This had to happen - if laptops of stone age are distributed in an age even children can differentiate between a junk laptop and real laptop.
How much was eaten up under the garb of donating laptops to the position holders by the team headed by the Grand Khadim Sahab will be unearthed someday - a new test case for CJ to take notice of.
And for my dear Barooq Sahib!! Laptop doesn't mean everything - a machine made 10 years ago has no value today - if the position holders were to be honoured, they should have been given laptops worthy of their success rather than humiliating with laptops that cannot run programmes of the day.
Let us rise above all politics and have the courage to say what is right and what is otherwise. The people have rejected laptops not because of Sharifs, but because of their ignorance to differentiate between a machine of today and a machine made ten years back - someone in the process made fortunes..
Gifted Laptops are student's ownership. Its in their interest whether they want to sell them or not?maybe they've already got them.
all the people saying that instead of giving laptops they should have started a scholarship program...please google PEEF...
@popsaeed: if this was the PTI you would be hacking this down our throats so spare me your sob story. Pakistan has bigger problems than the youth not having laptops.
Giving laptop to student is a good idea and it is useful in many ways. Blaming Sharif brothers for the actions of some unscrupulous students is not correct. Even if fifty percent use them to their advantage, the scheme is considered to be a success. Anything can be misused by anybody. In India, one state government has given cycles to the rural students to attend to the school. Of course, some students sold them. As usual, the opposition shouts as per their policy.
The only think that anyone has ever done for Punjab and this
C M is waisting money of poor people..
It would have been better and more beneficial for the students to receive cash instead of laptops. There would have been no waste and they would not need to do any hanky panky. However, by the laptop scheme the PML-N buyers got a hefty commission, the sellers are getting good commission/profits and the students are getting half or less. The money would have been better spent on the basic education on the poorest of the poor kids who have no resources to go to any college. But again like Yello Cabs, Banking schemes this is yet another feather in the cap of PML-N
why would anyone want a laptop with a picture of shahbaz shareef on it..... Who wouldn't sell it? If ur poor u need the money, and if ur not poor then u most likely have a laptop and wouldn't want a laptop with a pic of shareef on it. Its a smart move in my opinion.
@shami: well what is fault of that site? We should ban Sharifs and their family. They are wasting our tax money on their election campaign. This money should have been spent on free education for poor children but as children can't vote so Sharifs are giving laptops to get votes.
this has nothing to do with PMLN or Shareefs, its your own moral corruption, govt. provided laptops free of cost out of tax payers money and you are selling it in the market...who is corrupt YOU or govt? before raising a finger look into yourself. shame on youth of Pakistan and sorry for the govt who is ruling such a corrupt nation.
Why Shahbaz Sharif doesnt understand that instead of such schemes spend money on infrastructures like Libraries, computer labs, etc.
@Amjad: you can not compare Canada with Punjab... and in scholarships in US, UK and Canada government give stipend to poor people and stipend can be spent anywhree.. do you have shortage of electricity in Canada?? are there millions of poor people even can't have proper food? first provide essentials then luxuries.. its not fault of public, its fault of government.. if govt was so much in love with IT, they should have developed more computer labs in govt schools, colleges and unis that would have made this money asset of govt instead of a liability..
@Faraz: do you think it was a good initiative? its making your poor people more and more baggers.. instead of provide them job opportunities and good facilities at university you are making them more dependant on government..
@Khalid Aziz Chaudhary: this is our problem bcoz it was because its our tax money, the scheme was not funded by shareef's private property or did you pay for all these laptops? Do we need Laptops more than electricity?/
@Ch Allah Daad:
You have rightly analysed the situation, the people on fault here in this event are those corrupt so-called young students who are selling the laptops, What needs to be condemned here is the corrupt attitude of these young students.
@Barooq you may be right but the problem when you take initiatives with political gains in mind...doubts start surfacing. Why did pml n announce laptops after 30th october ????
I am a merit student in Lahore. When can I get my laptop? I promise I will not sell it online/...
As the laptops were distributed in TALENTED students so now they are showing their TALENT ! A worst one. Jab awam ka yea haal hay tu hkumrano se kia shikwa . :(
@khalid The laptops were given on merit which was determined by their academic performance. There was no test of the moral fortitude and well such a test would have been impossible anyway. Do you know when registering for the laptop, you have to declare that you don't already own a laptop and also it gives you option to voluntarily withdraw if you are a person of means ? how many students you thought actually gave a damn about that ? We are a nation of corrupt people. Can you please tell me in all honesty that on your laptop the operating system and software are purchased? We steal like its our birth right and 99% of the people with laptops are actually declaring that they bought the copy of Ms Word when they never did while installing. Everyone I know, and that includes me, have often tried to justify our own corruption with excuses but that was not the point. you can bash the significance or actual perceived benefit of the scheme and that is a valid debatable argument. But if a person decided to sell what was given to him by the government because he declared he needed it, its not the fault of the government. Open your eyes. The blind hatred of Sharifs or the magical tunes of pipe piper are clouding your judgment.
@popsaeed: @Khalid Aziz Chaudhary: Are you serious?? This is not the Sharif brothers own money that abba jee gave them as allowance! This is tax payers money that's going to waste, wake up and get some sense.
Sharifs did great service to the nation..They provided this great tool of information to poor students free of cost. Now its students duty to get best out of it. The vote bank of Sharifs is intact and they will win majority very comfortabley. They don't need much help of our disoriented youth. Actually PTI and Imran should be afraid as they claim Youth is on their side. Its the youth who is at guilty here. Soon they will sell their loyality with PTI at half price.
If the government is trying to help students but the students themselves are abusing the facility, why blame the government? It's like here in Canada where poor students get access to government aid for college or university but some students abuse the facility and use the money for other purposes. There will always be cheats- especially among young people looking for a quick buck.
The Sharif clan's total lack of intelligence is evident in everything they do. No surprises here.
May Allah have mercy on this nation. Our nation and the nation of Bani-Israel look same to me right now.
Lol hahahahahahahahahahahahshahshshshsh
Dear all PTI supporter please grow up and try to give mature comments its student fault not Government and one more point all party student get laptop with out discrimination and may be PTI student try to disown this scheme.
This country does not deserves good initiatives ... Or may be some one really need money so he would be selling his laptop...
But its not a laptop which they need , i had seen a report on t.v , in that report some student of raahim yar khan were selling these laptops , when the reporter ask that y they r selling these lappies , they said that they r so poor they even cant have money to continue their education , they also thanked for the laptops but they said that they dont need laptops but monetary assistance frm govt would be highly appreciated !!!! Salute to those students
Owner's discretion-use it or sell it. Whats your problem guys?
The distribution of laptops is just a kind of election campaign from Zalim-e- ala of Punjab. Using public money for their own advertisement is a shameful act from the so called shareefs. they have not learned from the history and as far as media is concerned it is just a bakao mall. very few ppl in media are mature enough to give their opinion otherwise the majority are themselves corrupt and black mailers. this is not a new scam from punjab govt. they r used to of doing these kind of things. jasi awam wasay hukamran
@Barooq so are you trying to say a corrupt student has received laptop ???? where is merit logo which pml n boasts about !!!!
hahaha its to early to blame students... may be some internal (panjab gov) person involved in this..
the problem is pml n is not taking pragmatic decisions. Just like sasti roti scheme they felt it would serve people but it backfired as it did not solve problems. Distribution of laptops does not solve the problems of youth. Now students have started asking questions whether these laptops delivered are on merit or not. Times have changed youth cannot be lured...
Sharif's must have made millions as commision on purchase of these computers which are sold on line! Pakistan Zindabad
I think we need electricity than to laptops, pmln have bankrupt punjab by their childish policies...2 rupee roti, peeli taxi, laptops..they should retire now.
well a student is corrupt and that is the fault of Mr.Sharif and while that student by virtue of supporting PTI is an angel. Strong logic there dear PTI trolls, strong logic! If that is the rationale of our youth, then I see a bleak scary future in front of us.
@Anonymous: tribune is not pro pti mr anonymous, and olx is a web site used by pakistanis for sale and purchase online
@Anonymous: Are you blind or just blinded by the sheer awesomeness of the Sharif brothers? Please have a look at the picture on this article, you will see that it's a screen shot of the ad from www.olx.com.pk Is that not enough evidence that these laptops are now being sold online? You can also visit Hafeez center in Lahore and ask the shop keepers there.
No surprises . People don't have money to eat roti two times a day, what they are going to do with laptop? obviously SALE it.
Congratulation to All PML (n) fans. We really need Imran Khan to be our next Prime Minister & this is not a Nara only.. I mean it
The question is that was a laptop a primary need of the people ? Though it aimed at encouraging students and appreciating them but looking at the big picture, it was nothing but a total waste of money and a scheme to get more votes!!! The money spent on this could have been spent on Dams or for making an industry which would in-turn increase the employment opportunities for the people!
Shame on You Khadim-a- Double Alla
this exaclty what i has forseen, it would have been so much better to start scholarships for merit it would have been better, but no khade ala thot it would be cool to distribute laptos in a region where there is loadshedding more than 12 hours!! iditotic
You know what, even I or someone living in Cambodia can put up a fake ad on OLX anonymously. OLX is regularly used by stalkers to post FAKE ads that attract attention, and then give someone else's number to take revenge or bug him/her !!! How on Earth do you do know the authenticity of that ad? & the number posted?
The petition has it wrong. They are being distributed on merit. Merit based on corruption and greed.
Another failed attempt by pti trolls , pro pakistani website? are you freaking serious? that is your source?
Usual corruption form Shareef brothers Ch. Allah Daad where are you ?
@Tanzeel: LOL, dude why do you need a laptop? To sell it on olx? Do you have electricity at home to power the laptop or an internet connection? My advice to the youth of Pakistan, please stop asking for hand outs and start building something with your own hands.
This is a corrupt country, even if 50% of the laptops are retained by the students and utilized for their academic purposes, we should still consider it a success story.
We Need Electricity!
Hahahaha... I can't stop laughing at this! This is exactly what I predicted would happen. This was a pathetic free-bee that the khadim-e-allaa had cooked up to get the youth on his side after October 30th, 2011.
Hahaha so much for good governance and planning...
aoa.im tanzeel from multan i done my graduation in 2011 wid 60% marks from bahaudin zikria uni multan.. but im not eligible for laptop.. i ws private candidate due 2 financial prob i cant study more
Good. Please donate 5-10% this money to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital (SKMH) and dont forget to vote for PTI. JazakAllah Khair.
People should know Sharif Brothers have no sense whatsoever.
"Royal" family's "majestic" give-aways, on expense of public money. public money wasted. votes bought. laptops sold. Shame.
Recommend this if you had a good laugh at it!
might as well sell them..earn a few bucks..use them to some other useful place..i dont see anything wrong with tht.
Best use of money...Shareefs cannot even plan next wekk how they could plan the youth future..
as expected lol
I think the students who are given these laptops should not forget that its just another way of the Shareef brothers to increase their voters list...I mean come on !!! have some common sense...instead of distributing laptops ...they should do something to strengthen the system of government schools.....stupid steps by stupid govt !!
I had stated this fear long time back in my blog aforsk@blogspot.com. Surely the schemes implemented in this part of the world are short sighted :(
The amount spend on purchase of laptops, could have been used to pay scholarships for university dues of deserving students.
This would have resulted in minimal misuse of resources.
it was expected.. its unfortunate that ppl dont realised the value of computer - Allah may help 'em
Ha Ha ha Ha ha. another blunder by the Sharifs. WHy do I have a feeling that in the coming elections PMLN are likely to ran 3rd or even 4th in the seat count.
This country does not deserve such citizens The site should ban the sales
