Shazia is in the ICU at the moment, her condition is reported to be ‘critical’ and it is difficult to tell when she will regain consciousness.
According to sources, Shazia was suffering from appendicitis when the doctors operated on her, during which the electricity went out and the ventilator stopped functioning. The lack of oxygen negatively affected Shazia’s brain.
The principal of Allama Iqbal Medical College, Dr Javed Akram formed a five member team to investigate the matter and the team confirmed that Shazia went into a coma due to the sudden lack of oxygen when the electricity went out.
Regarding backup during the operation, Dr Javed Akram said that when electricity fluctuates due to unannounced load shedding, it takes some time to switch to either generator or UPS, which not only results in the absence of electricity but also damages expensive machinery at the hospital.
A petition is being prepared at the hospital that will be presented n the Supreme Court and the chief justice will be requested to look into the matter.
A 10-12 hour loadshedding is a norm at the Jinnah hospital.

This is so unfortunate that we can not provide these basics even to dying people in the hospitals. Which direction we are following :(
Most of you didn,t read the article well, there are UPS and generators...offcourse...BUT...it takes a while after they start working.... and THIS WHILE in this case was fatal

I'm a physician myself, and I know for a fact that all teaching hospitals (Jinnah Hospital is a tertiary care teaching hospital of Allama Iqbal Medical College) have backup generators which switch on automatically within seconds when the electricity goes off. Apparently this seems more of a negligence on the part of the hospital administration and staff, which is trying to blame it on electricity load shedding. A proper impartial investigation be done, and responsibility should be fixed for this criminal negligence
And people still want to vote for PPP and PML-N. Please for the love of God see what these two mafias have made our country into.
I've not really got any sort of medical expertise, but I can't help wondering why the surgeons wouldn't have a manual respirator on hand? In a country where electricity is now an exquisite luxury why are we still so myopic we pretend it isn't a problem. Why do we ignore the fact that we're plunging ourselves into a darker age? We are destroying our manufacturing sectors, publishing and most of our industry. Load shedding is almost a concentrated effort in enforcing an agricultural society on Pakistani people. We should acknowledge it, we should denounce it. If it takes time for UPS to kick in, or back up generators, then how can they be seen as an alternative to mains electricity? How long was the girl without oxygen? Did they lose electricity and hope at the same time? Should they not have tried to manually ventilate her? They WERE in a hospital after all, even if it were one running without power.
You have millions to spare for atomic weapons but not a few thousand for a generator in one of your most important hospitals? I can only shake my head in disbelief.
@Zehra I completely agree with you. Backup generator is a must for any hospital, this is an act of criminal negligence. I hope Pakistan people can understand difference between bad governance and negligence of Hospital.

VIPs are not getting load shedding but hospitals have to face it so common people can die and go into comas. very sad.
what about backup generators? where were they? this isnt just the Govt's fault.. All other hospitals in the country have backup Systems
Look the worth of human being in my loving country Pakistan. My mother was admit in ICU at Jinnah Hospital last year for brain tumour. I witnessed this load shedding while being there with her. At least exempt hospitals from load shedding. Who will listen to our requests. The government is the biggest evil in our country.
Healthcare was never a priority for the Punjab Government. Why a UPS was not provided?

May I ask why she was on a ventilator during an appendectomy operation? Something is a bit strange here. I never heard of anyone being on a ventilator during such an operation.
This is why the rulers always go abroad for their medical treatments.

Oh my God ! this is terrible . This shouldn't happen in operation theaters at least . What if it were a heart surgery or other critical operation . God forbid lives can be lost. Government should spare hospitals at least .I pray Shazia is fine soon and her mental faculties are unaffected. May Allah keep us in safety.
it is more of the hospotal negligence rather than pining the blame on ladshedding, yes loadshedding is wrong and is toom uch yes, but in some way we all are also responisble, we steal light, we are ok with kundas, slowing of meters, bribing? arnt we?? the hospital should have a back up gerneator for icu and operation teater, such that it automatically swtiches on loadshedding!!

Raja Pervaiz Ashraf (who claimed that load shedding will end in Dec, 2008) , Naveed Qamar (who claims that their is no Load shedding in country) should be made accountable for this case.
This news is false: the girl was admitted to the Hospital on March 2nd, I saw the exact same news on a tv channel yesterday and a few minutes later saw another news ticker saying that the hospital administration had lied to the media and the girl did not go into coma because of electricity issues. We all know that there is non-stop load shedding in many parts of the country and specially and Punjab but news headlines like these that are false information make a mockery of the situation. Please call the hospital administration again and confirm this news or better yet go there or talk to the relatives of the patient to get your facts right!
