Olympics: FIFA orders release of U23 players
“The executive body decided that the release of U23 players by the clubs shall be compulsory,” said Fifa
ZURICH:
Football governing body Fifa has ordered clubs to release under-23 players called up by their national teams for the Olympic Games football tournament, according to Newsnow. The act is controversial as the competition is not part of the international match calendar. “The executive body decided that the release of U23 players by the clubs shall be compulsory,” said Fifa in a statement. The Olympic football tournament, which clashes with the European pre-season, is restricted to U23 players although each team can field up to three extra players. Meanwhile, the football tournament at London 2012 kicks off the competitive action at the Olympics on July 25.
