Chelsea manager warns against complacency after Benfica win.

LISBON: Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo insisted his team still had a ‘mountain to climb’ after a gritty 1-0 victory over Benfica that put the Premier League side on course for the Champions League semi-finals.

A 75th-minute goal on the counter-attack from Salomon Kalou gave Chelsea a huge advantage heading into next week’s return-leg at Stamford Bridge as Di Matteo’s risky selection gamble paid handsome dividends. “We haven’t qualified yet,” said Di Matteo. “It’s a dangerous assumption to think you’ve qualified. Away from home Benfica has had some great results. I think we’ve put ourselves in a good position but it’s not a result you can rely on.”

Meanwhile, a double from French striker Karim Benzema inspired nine-time winners Real Madrid to a 3-0 victory over Cypriot surprise packages APOEL Nicosia and all but ensured a last four spot. Real coach Jose Mourinho was pleased with his team’s performance.

“I’m happy because my team took to the task and dominated the game against a team that gave us a lot of headaches,” said Mourinho. “They made life difficult for us, with their fantastic tactics.”
