Sindh government to impose ban on carrying weapons

KARACHI: The government of Sindh has once again decided to impose a ban on carrying weapons in Karachi. The government had earlier lifted the ban on March 12, saying that people needed self-defence.

The decision was taken considering the situation in the city. The Sindh Home Department will issue an official notification regarding the ban.

Traders have said that they should have permission to carry weapons.

Karachi had earlier become a target of fierce aggression as tyres and vehicles were set on fire, people were killed in firing incidents and roads were blocked on the day when MQM announced to mourn the death of its workers.

At least 10 people lost their lives, two dozen were injured and around 46 vehicles set alight in the violence.

On 12 March the holders of licenced firearms breathede a sigh of relief that they can finaly get to use the weapons that the purchased after due police verification and payment of all charges to the goverment. Only to find out out that once again law abiding people cant use the weapons they have legally aquired while people who have no licences to begin with can pretty much do as they please!

Is this government stupid or what ? First, they dole out gun licenses like its going out of fashion and now try to control carrying of those guns ? Granted not all licensed guns are used in crime (although I have my doubts about that), but does the government expect a person who might be at risk of kidnapping not to carry his weapon.

Only Sindh Interior minister can come up with these reactionary decisions. And for a person bent on committing a crime, as if this ban is going to make a difference ?
