Reasons unknown: Under-trial prisoner commits suicide in court lockup

The deceased, 27-year-old Riaz, hanged himself inside the bathroom with the help of his cummerbund.

KARACHI:

An under-trial prisoner allegedly committed suicide in a bathroom inside the Malir district court’s lockup on Wednesday.

The Al-falah police SHO Asif Munawar said that the deceased, identified as 27-year-old Riaz, was imprisoned at the Malir jail and had arrived at the court for his first hearing. After the hearing he was shifted to the court’s lockup where he hanged himself inside the bathroom with the help of his cummerbund. He died at the spot.  His body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities where the doctors performed his postmortem under the presence of the East district magistrate. The body was then handed over to Riaz’s family for burial.

According to the Sacchal police, Riaz was arrested in January after being caught mugging the valuables from passengers of a bus on the Super Highway. Riaz was apprehended by the police with the help of some passengers.
