Sachin Tendulkar, who turns 39 next month, achieved the milestone during India's Asia Cup match against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Dhaka.
The Mumbai batsman, who has compiled more Test and one-day runs than anyone in history, also has 51 Test hundreds to his credit.
He was also the first batsman to score a double-hundred in ODIs.
Tendulkar made both his ODI and Test debut against Pakistan in 1989.
Here are six facts about one of the all-time greatest batsmen and the face of Indian cricket for over two decades:
- A teenage prodigy, Tendulkar was born on April 24, 1973 in Mumbai and made his test debut against Pakistan as a curly-haired 16-year-old, becoming the youngest Indian test player. A year later, he hit his maiden test hundred in England.
- Tendulkar holds a number of batting records, including the aggregate one-day runs (18,360 at the time of reaching his 100th ton) and centuries (49). He also holds the record for most test hundreds (51).
- He had two unsuccessful terms as India captain, the first aged 23 in 1996 before being axed 17 months later after his batting suffered. He was reappointed in 1999 but stood down after a 3-0 test series rout in Australia the following year. * Tendulkar was named player of the 2003 World Cup, scoring a record 673 runs to help India reach the final, where they lost to Australia. The next year, he equalled compatriot Sunil Gavaskar's world record of 34 test hundreds while compiling 248 not out, his highest score, in Australia.
- Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1997.
- Surpassed West Indies' Brian Lara as the highest test run-scorer in 2008. Lara had scored 11,953 runs before he retired from international cricket in 2007. Tendulkar has scored 15,470 test runs .
- Became the first batsman to score 200 runs in one-day internationals against South Africa in Gwalior, India in Feb 2010. He finished 200 not out off 147 balls with 25 fours and three sixes.
- Became the first batsman to score 100 international centuries after stroking a single off left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan in an Asia Cup one-dayer against Bangladesh.

I hope the 'century of comments' to this news item (now in 80s) happens before he scores a century later today against Pakistan, his 50th ODI ton! Hope we win this match to meet Pakistan in the final & watch Sachin's 51st ODI ton before we 'pandy men' are sent home. Jai Ho!
well done to him, congratulations to indian friends!!!
@oh no.....!!!: Dr No, it was a cheap 'stunt' to make his otherwise ordinary book into a best-seller. It failed. But he was regally chewed by all his colleagues! While brash Shoaib is history, polite Sachin is still dazzling!
@Dr Priyanka: who is Dr Priyanka???? Shoaib Akhtar is holder of record for fastest delivery on cricket field, he is best remembered as bowler who hit sachin on body several times, ok sachin might have hit a few fours against him but sachins legs were always trembling facing this "who".....then again shoaib had spells of 6-14 v NZ, 6-26 v Aus, 6-17 v WI, 6-37 v Eng, 5-37 v Ind and so many more....want more intro....???
IT TOOK 35 one day for single century!
@jerseybb:U were right we did loose the match due to Sachin's slow batting and poor bowling in the last 10 overs
@Sulaiman Khan: Dear Mr Sulaiman Khan, you probably meant "It is upto you when and where (and if at all) to retire". Sachin is really an eternal cricketer and a demi-God to me!
@arvind: Dear Mr Arvind, going by all the comments to this news item, one can see that Pakistanis are all praise & we Indians are burning with jealousy! We can't withstand the great heights scaled by a fellow Indian! That is how we handed over our country to Brits on a proverbial silver platter.
match loser ....???
Now Pakistan win on Sunday and send the little pandy men home.
Scoring 100 international centuries! It's an act of criminal proportion. He should be tried in International court of criminal tribunal for the atrocities he commited against the bowlers across the cricketing world. If there was ever an ordinary cricketer been showered with extaordinary accolades it's Sachin Tendulkar. Having said that, I will join Sachin Tendulkar fan club in no time, if he changes his name, for example, to Saqlin Taseer or, Saiful Tomar.
@Cricket Fan: Who is Shoaib Akhtar?
Take a cue from Dravid and Retire, Sachin. You'll remain great always - but continuing further just as the Indian team is on a downhill-slide will only damage you!!!
just try to count his centuries when india really won a match because of his batting...very few indeed..so mainly he plays whenever there is a drawn test match or india on losing side...hahah
Shoaib akhtar rightly said...NOT A MATCH WINNER
well done sachin!
It is axiomatic that no one can ever surpass his might records, for he is not an ordinary individual like the rest. He is simply the best, Cheers!
this is pleasantly surprising! Online indian newspapers today are flooded with posts ridiculing and abusing sachin. And here,of all places, i find more people praising him.
Great batsman of the world indeed Tandulker please pray to god and thanked him.
Mixed day for us Indians.Happens.That's life. Now we must forget this loss and focus on defeating Pakistan Sunday.
Obviously I'd like to see my India win even though I like Misbah and Shahid..Our Pakistani friends need not be too overjoyed since they too nearly lost against Bangladesh 5 days ago.So what else?
A useless century played at a pace against team interests , in search of personal milestone. Tendulkar's 1st 50 came of 63 balls and the next 50 came of 75 balls at a pathetic strike rate of 75, contributing largely to India's defeat.
Congratulation Sachin......U Rock man...:))))
and India lost hahahhaa..Really made my day
@Rehman: I admit he is one of the greatest...but when his ODI 100 record is filtered then it comes out that out of 49 centuries , 33 came in wins, but out of those 33 only 19 came in chases and he was at crease when the winning runs were hit only on 7 occasions.....so he actually was involved in taking and chasing down on 7 occasions....!!! so how can he be great finisher...he was a good accumulator but not a great finisher.... in tests out of his 51 100s only 20 came in victories.......!!!!! and out of those 20 he only scored 2 100s in third innings of a test and only one on fourth inning of a test so his contribution in teams win on deteriorated pitch is easily evident...he never guarded team home on his shoulders with 100s in third or fourth inning on 4th or 5th day pitch...again proven he is accumulator but not ultimate match winner.....just take Laxman in compariosn or even Dravid and you will see that those two were real heroes when it comes to 100s and chasing down targets......!!!!!! (mind you this data is not hearsay but it is based on research from cricinfo)
We will see Sachin's 50th ODI ton on 18th March against Pakistan.
WE allowed Sachin this 100 since we knew we would win. Better luck next time india.:)
yes little mastered really mastered this match!
BANGLADESH WON!!!!!
Congrats!
Gr8, Yes, Sachin did it.... some fellows are burning with jelousy aboutr this gr8 achivement. Neverthless he should continue to play for india and he must play in next world cup.
He would not have left cricket until making that 100th ton....finally he is done now & looking forward to his retirement... :)
I will not be surprised if india loses this very game against Bangladesh, afterall sachin scored a century,
CONGRATULATIONS SACHIN. Some fellows are burning with jealousy. Nobody will break your record in the next 100 years. It is upto you when and where to retire.
Dont like the hoopla around sachin century which as an Indian cricket fan in my opinion it is a meaningless milestone and a non event .
finally no india-pakistan hate war in a related news. all credit to my pakistani brothers n sisters. thanks
Got to his 100 of 138 balles playing against Bangladesh on a batting track. All credit to Tendulkar for his 100 centuries but this was one of his ugliest. Had it not been for his selfish batting in the middle India would have gone well past 300.
Why are people concerned about the King....let him make another history...
What a great Player he is. Truely a legend......
Sachin has so far scored 49 centuries in ODI,s and 50th one would be scored in the finals against Pakistan.
Incidentally, this was Sachin’s maiden ton in ODIs against Bangladesh.
ST, is a Titan among ordinary men. Sad to see some are still trying to belittle his numbers by talking non sense. Can anybody give the name of a single batsman from Pakistan or B. Desh which even has a fraction of the records in both one day and tests? Even near the end of his career the Little Master has better numbers than most. His double century in ODI was against S. Africa not a B grade team. Numbers do not lie, people do. Well played Little Master. Now it is your decision when to retire, between you and your slecters and nobody else's business.
Well done , Tendulkar. It is time to retire now.
congrats but please retire now...lol
great! now please exit the stage!
true master blaster..finally did it that smashed all records..hats off little master...;;p
Please retire.congraTulations
come on sachin, kick off your career.
Its time he announces his retirement.
when are you going to resign???
east or west sachin is the best
Congratulations on arguably one of hte greatest achivements in international cricket..
I can see his retirement with Asia Cup in his hands !!!
true genius....took cricket to a new level
Sachin-the cricketing legend, yet another feather in his cap. Simply the best batsman ever produced by cricketing world. CONGRATs Sachin n CONGRATs to the great game of cricket.
How many matches India has won in which Sachin scored a century?
Well done
@Waleed Khan: Yes 75 % of his 100 centuries are against Bangladesh...
Congratulations. Its a great achievement.
This will be remembered for the next 100 years ...you have made India proud once again :-)
So finally it is there...we all knew it will be on easier wickets (India/Bangladesh/Sri Lanka) and against Bangladesh or Zimbabwe. It's time he hang his boots now at least for the shorter form of the game.I am sure he also knows his prime is over.
time to retire now.
Little genius. But will be good for us .
when is he retiring ?
Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. beautifull. Congrats Lil King.
What a remarkable milestone achieved in the History of Cricket. WOW! Sachin Congratulations :)
This also lessons the pressure on Pakistan! :p
Well done Sachin, great record that is unlikely to be beaten. Take a bow!
congrats
took him long enough ;) still all's well that ends well :) congrats sachin! 10 years from now, nobody would remember the time (& jokes) he took to achieve this record BUT everyone would remember the achievement itself for a long LONG time...
Finally its out the way and he can get back to normal cricket
Lets celebrate cricket and not start a hate-Indian comments saga. This, literally, is next to impossible to emulate. Take a bow little master. Thanks for all the entertainment you've provided since my childhood days.
Congratulations on the fabulous performance! you deserve it...!
Thanks God its not against Pakistan,
Finally!!!!!
Whohoo yhea..
No doubt Tendulkar is the best player of cricket. Congrats to him for his outstanding performance.
Well done Sachin. Unlikely that we'll ever see another batsman get to this record. Take a bow!
Thank You, Bangladesh :P
