A police constable and suspect were killed while three other people were injured in an encounter on Burns Road on Thursday morning, said the Aram Bagh police.
The incident took place near Fresco Chowk. The police received information about a suspect identified as Jahangir and his accomplice mugging people and holding employees of a milk shop hostage as they robbed it. As soon as the police got there, the suspects shot at them and injured 37-year-old police constable identified as Mohammad Yaqoob. The bandits tried to escape but were unsuccessful as the police started to chase them. The police opened fire and managed to kill Jahangir while the other suspect escaped. They seized a TT pistol, three cell phones, an unregistered motorcycle and Rs90,000 from the suspect. Tariq, Waris and Kamran were also injured in the encounter and were taken to Civil Hospital. According to SHO Sajid Mehmood, the money and cell phones they seized from Jahangir suggested that the two men had mugged over a dozen people. He said that initial investigation suggested that Jahangir did not have a criminal record but had recently become involved in criminal activities.
The police constable was taken to Civil hospital, where he passed away a few hours later. Yaqoob used to live in Garden Police Quarters and was from Sialkot, Punjab. He leaves behind two children and was posted at the Aram Bagh police station a few years ago. His body was taken to Sialkot for the burial.
The police registered FIR no. 80/12 on a complaint made by Fahad Yousuf, the milk shop owner, and said that an investigation was being carried out.
