Waheeda Shah incident

Letter March 15, 2012
I think that the Supreme Court took a timely decision in taking Ms Shah to task for her actions.

LAHORE: This is with reference to Amber Darr’s article “Only a slap?” (March 14) in which she has expressed her dismay at the Supreme Court terming Waheeda Shah’s act of slapping polling officers a more serious offence than the killing of Sarfraz Shah at the hands of the Rangers. Sarfraz’s killing was no doubt a heinous crime, but Ms Shah’s actions were also in clear violation of the writ of the government. If this action was allowed to go unpunished, it would have created a precedent with highly undesirable consequences i.e., accepting that disrespecting the government’s writ was no big deal. Therefore, I think that the Supreme Court took a timely decision in taking Ms Shah to task for her actions.
