As it happened in the present case though, the only English newspaper that gave this former general’s impertinence, and his comeuppance, the prominence it deserved was this newspaper of record. And well done, The Express Tribune. All the others hid the words within the stories of that day’s happenings in the SC to their great discredit. Not one teensy weensy headline. Bad.
Let us recall, that Beg still a little hung-over from the days he was the mighty COAS of this blighted country more than two decades ago (!), thanked the court “for making me complete my ‘hat-trick’ of appearing thrice before this apex court – first before CJ Afzal Zullah, second time before CJ Sajjad Ali Shah and now before this honourable court under the dynamic leadership of CJ Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry. This is an honour bestowed on me, which no other COAS can possibly claim”. My, my, sarky what!
I was present in the court that day and was pleased to see the majesty with which My Lords reacted to Beg’s abhorrent way of talking down to the highest and mightiest court in the land just because he was once a general. “Is he here to play golf”, asked My Lord the Chief Justice of Beg’s counsel; “He should tender apology or we will take him to task”. Which the mighty general did, with alacrity.
I might add that those of us who have long fought for the supremacy of elected civilians and high civilian bodies such as parliament and the superior judiciary over the exclusive Club of Generals who make up the higher command echelons of the army, should be much heartened too, by a remark made by My Lord Khilji Arif Hussain, as reported in this newspaper of record (March 10): “Your air of superiority remains unchanged, along with your mantra of ‘bloody civilians’.
However, whilst we are rightly elated at the small scratches that are appearing in the Teflon-coating of our generals, we should realise that this ‘air of superiority’ will take time to dissipate to the point that they begin to look upon us ‘bloody civilians’ as their equals. As is amply demonstrated by some remarks passed by the present COAS at a reception in Islamabad and reported in the press on the March 15. Referring to the Mehran Bank scam, Kayani said words to the effect that it had happened 20 years earlier and discussing it now was fighting history. “We should learn from the past, live in the present with a focus on the future,” he said.
‘Fighting history’? How is it fighting history when a petition pending in the highest court is heard after 16 years and the then chief of the army and the ISI come out as the main players in an alleged scheme to queer the pitch for a particular political party? One should have thought that Kayani would have taken a page out of the gentlemanly General Waheed Kakar’s book and have said it was good that the SC was hearing the case at long last and that it should take it to its logical conclusion. Pity he did not.
On another matter of grave import Kayani is reported to have said that ‘the ruthless criticism of ISI in Pakistan was far higher than any criticism made on RAW, Mossad or the CIA in India, Israel or USA’. Well, true, but does he realise that the foreign intelligence agencies named are not in the face of their own citizens on a daily basis as is our very own ISI? When was the last time that any of the agencies named, first starved and then dumped bodies of so-called terrorists by the roadside? Much more than that whilst Mossad and CIA have had some uniformed officers as their chiefs and RAW has always had a civilian as its head, the ISI is virtually an army formation.
On yet another, he is reported to have said: “The debate (on TV channels) does not support national institutions as it works to de-motivate soldiers performing their duties in 20˚Celsius below the freezing point. We need to motivate our soldiers instead of demoralising them by such debates” — (Pakistan Today, March 15). This is emotional blackmail, pure and simple. Who has EVER criticised our sons (and daughters now that we have women in combat roles) fighting for the country on the front-lines? Doesn’t Kayani know that the criticism is aimed ONLY at the senior ranks i.e., major generals and above, and their equivalents in the other Services?
It is sad indeed, that after all of the catastrophes (for there is no better word to describe the utter command failures) brought upon the country in the last year that Kayani should still say that he had ‘taken a “conscious decision” to keep his institution out of politics’. I hope the ISPR can help him recall just how many times over the past four years I have called upon the army to please take over one more time so that every future wannabe Bonaparte would have nightmares even countenancing such an event, even in 2092! It is nothing but arrogance to even think in this way. Conscious decision indeed!
P.S. I salute General Asad Durrani for standing tall in the SC and saying in a clear and strong voice that as a general of the Pak Army he should not have done what he did. Well done, sir. Respect.

Shafisahab, great article! I have e always wondered why Gen. Kayani is invited to all cabinet meetings as if he is royalty. He should have no role in decision-making. Political leadership should take decision s & order Gen. Kayani as to what he shouldcarry out. Why is the political leadership of Pakistan devaluing itself & unnecessarily boosting Army's prestige by calling Kayani to cabinet meetings in this manner?
The total disregard Mr Shafi has for his personal safety inorder to inform us the Public is truly a commendable task ...Live long and prosper Sir .
Another anti-Pakistan article in the Express Tribune.
A sterling piece.One of your best, sir. Regards.
praise to asad durani for what? he did not volunteer to give affidavit in first place. why he has been lauded as brave and honest? he was a crook who's accepting his crimes
Was the armed forces only responsible for the mess In Pakistan?Did not the failure encompassed all the institutions including judiciary? How many times The Supreme Court of Pakistan ruled against the military take over of democratic institutions as against constitution? Did they not give a free chit to military dictatorships on the doctrine of necessity? There is a uniform rot in South Asian Institutions in various stages with degrees of decay. No country in south Asia is immune from this decay. Scoring card will place Pakistan, Bangladesh. Sri Lanka and India in the order of decay. South Asian Institutions are in tremendous stress as the result of overpopulation together with vast underclass which lives hand to mouth, day to day susceptible to destructive populist emotions Did the Hon CJ Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry entertain any motion during his tenure under President Musharaff to rule that Paratrooper Commando Musharaff committed unconstitutional act by coup d'etat ? As long as you place blind trust on individual saviours there is no hope of building viable institutions.
Excellent article..the 'bloody civilians' attitude has been there since this country was created.. for some reason unexplained, our Generals seem to think that God has created them for the sole purpose of 'saving' us from.......????.. I guess that comes from living in manicured cantonments, away from the rabble, and riding around in Mercedes Benz's, paid for by the the poverty stricken, electricity and security denied public..oh, I wonder if these Mercedes' are bullet-proof!!..
Correction
For Rupees 1.75 Lakh Read Rupees 1.75 Lakh CRORES (one Crore is 10 Million)
error is deeply regretted
Comment by a serving Soldier , "India and Israel do not possesses such corrupt politicians" , needs to be taken not with a pinch but ton of salt . I don't know about Israeli politicians but the Indian ones may beat their Pakistani brethren by a very very big margin . One Indian politician could defraud the exchequer to the tune of (Indian) rupees 1.75 Lakhs in G-2 spectrum allotment, where as an other one swindled almost as much as the Indian Army's annual defence budget in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) scandal in 2010. Mind you , this is just the tip of the iceberg. Can Pakistani any politician boast of such achievements ?
It is NOT the politicians , but the "INSTITUTIONS " which need to be looked at .
Sir, you're hardly a `bloody civilian' - once a fauji, always a fauji! Am so proud to say that we both served our armies with pride and distinction..
Bravo !
@A serving soldier: Tell your army to stop interfering in civilian matters, tell them to stop abducting Pakistanis, depriving their families of their loved ones... Tell you high command to leave us alone... Do your job of protecting the borders and let us be... And we will stop criticising the Army... I find it shocking that you insist on meddling in Pakistan's politics and when people complain you throw this emotional blackmailing our way... Pathetic...
Bingo...headshot
well done kamran shafi once again you write the master piece. its only kamran shafi who has courage to write such bold article against establishment. i think supreme court should punish aslam baig and co.(at least take back all national awards which they were bestow in past).once they will be punished it will set an example.
If not for Pakistani media, Indians would never know that RAW even exists. Aren't Secret Services supposed to be SECRET
@Baloch Youth
So fine, vote them out. But hold on dearly to your right to vote. Because if ISI & GHQ have it their way, even your grand children will never have the right to vote.
Well written well written well written... 2 thumbs up!
@serving soldier
brother, nobody criticizes army. Its only the generals and other high ranking officers who are criticized. Okay, lets assume for the sake of argument that people criticize army, then what about all actions of our army in past 65 years our existence. From 1948, 1965, 1971 , killing a PM, deporting another and plotting against civillians, kargil, balochistan, sindh, spreading terrorism in other nations.. The crimes committed by army are worser than judiciary , politicians'. Even then we ordinary civillians pay taxes to improve our armed forces and except whatever few crumbs our army throw at us. So dont tell me that your blood boils when some body criticizes army because our army is worst than gestapo( if you want me to be honest) but still you will label me as liberal scum or indian dog. I have accepted my fate that I will always remain a slave of our own army
"Doesn’t Kayani know that the criticism is aimed ONLY at the senior ranks." Yeah. It's hard for anyone to blame the ones doing the fighting even if they want to. They're naturally under the threat of being accused of insubordination and whatever else they want to twist and toss in pending on how much the superior officer is annoyed by it.
Love you man. Thanks a lot, may God bless you for your being brave.

Well said. Pure arrogance. It's not your decision to make, General, but a requirement of your oath to uphold the constitution and not to indulge in politics. The constitution and the law of the land doesn't leave anything to the effect for you to decide. Wake up ! No matter how much they try, the inertia from the deeds of their predecessors catches up with these Generals.
Shafi Sahib, everything you wrote makes some sense but timing of your criticism is not right. Nations don't dig old issues when their best men and women are fighting war and dying everyday. Fighting forces are a like a body, you cannot separate head from the body.
@Baloch Youth:
all people, especially politicians, make false promises.
Pikistan and its poodles thank u sir.
@Baloch Youth: This article is not about the present governments performance or Gilani or Zardari. It is about exposing the hypocrisies of our Generals and how they think they can willy-nilly go about playing with the future of 180 million people without any form of accountability and then having the gall to challenge sections of society and calling them unpatriotic when they try to hold the Army accountable for their misdeeds. Hope you re-read the article and evaluate it in t his light.
@Baloch Youth: Who is this "we" wanting to get rid of an elected government? You have every right to say so but only as "I", not "We". Every leader, even retired generals on TV now talk about 18 crores wanting or not wanting something, as if all have been consulted before the remark. Let us leave it to those 18 crores to decide at the next polls. If the majority wants to get rid of Zardari/Gilani, that is fine but the change should never come in any other way as in the past!!!
Will you write about the fun of the Judiciary made in the speeches of PM Gilani today? No you won't!
@ET: Kudos for being upright.
Very well put, Mr Shafi. Control of the "Bonapartes" is the first step in the control of their underhand 'campaigns'!
Sir a well written ''Angrezi'' with all the impressive taunts. . . With due apologies. .If you proudly appreciates RAW n Mosad's civilian roles why everytime you forget that India and Israel doesnt possesses such corrupt politicians rather leaders as we proudly possesses. . . its not that I still wear Khaki and cant hate my commanders BUT yes soldiers of today feel agony once such articles and talk shows (read operas) are telecasted just to squilch the thirst of hating people in uniform. . . May Allah bless us all with wisdom and harmony and make this country a heaven for us - Amen
I am so elated these days. I wish this process is not inhibited.
Shafi writes as if Gilani is a messiah that needs to be saved from satan's clutches. Gilani and Zardari have made more false promises than any other leader. Sorry to say but i dont care whatever happens to the PPP leadership.We just want to get rid of them.
This is much truth in what you say but at the same time if you could say something about the pathetic moral behaviour and incompetence of the other side as well, it would not seem so one sided.
Did Durrani say that or did he say that it was all on him and nothing to do with the ISI?
At which point, if I read correctly, the CJ told him "that is something WE will decide".
you are one of the sane voices in Pakistan. Keep up the good work.
Very true sir, wonderful job. salute you too..
Brilliant as ever!
God Bless you Sir!
P.S. I salute General Asad Durrani for standing tall in the SC and saying in a clear and strong voice that as a general of the Pak Army he should not have done what he did. Well done, sir. Respect.
I remember a TV show with Abid Sher Ali and General Hamid Gul, where the latter said that some of his actions were indeed harmful to the country but he was only following orders, upon which the former said something to the effect that it is amazing how many retired army men suddenly grow a conscience. Same is the case with Asad Durrani. He should be put away for a long time after all the evidence that has just been disclosed.
Brilliant!
Excellent Sir.
Mr Shafi , once again you've managed to nail it on the head...
