Voter verification: 4.5 million citizens verify records over SMS

Over 4.5 million citizens so far have verified their vote registration from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) using the SMS service launched to facilitate voters.

The service was launched on February 29, 2012 by the ECP in collaboration with the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) and mobile phone operators.

While speaking to APP on Wednesday, Deputy Chairman (Nadra) Tariq Malik said that 1.44 million voters used Mobilnk, 1.282 million voters used Telenor, Ufone was used by 980,000 voters, while 448.434 and 932,816 voters used Warid and Zong respectively.

According to the number of SMS' sent, most of them were Mobilink subscribers, with the remaining following:

  • Mobilink (#1)

  • Telenor (#2)

  • Ufone (#3)

  • Warid (#4)

  • Zong (#5)

Malik said that the SMS voter verification service was launched to facilitate 85 million voters across Pakistan, alongside displaying the new electoral rolls.

Registered voters can send their Computerised National Identity Cards (CNIC) number without hyphens via SMS to 8300 at anytime from anywhere in the country. After sending the SMS, the voter will subsequently receive a message in Urdu containing their name, village, city, tehsil or district, location (electoral area) and the serial number of vote registered in the preliminary electoral rolls.
