“No country would sell arms to us, incite conflicts or make our people poor,” he went on, as applause broke out in the hall which was brimming with people. The peace ambassador, popularly called Guru ji, was in Karachi, while on a three-day visit to Pakistan. Shankar is known for his meditation practices and stress-management therapies in many countries and is the founder of the Art of Living Foundation.
Before Guru ji addressed his admirers at Sheraton Hotel late on Tuesday night, qawaal Fareed Ayaz made the people sway to the beat of Amir Khusro’s Chhaap Tilak, and later, to Lal Meri Pat.
When Shankar arrived, the bare-footed audience gave him a standing ovation, while chanting “Our Guru ji is here,” and welcomed him with garlands of fresh flowers. The Muttahida Qaumi Movment’s Farooq Sattar and adviser Sharmila Farooqi also came in just after Shankar.
As Guru ji settled on the stage, adorned heavily with roses, Fareed Ayaz greeted him by singing “Mera piya ghar aaya,” and then presented him with an Ajrak and a Sindhi topi.
A teacher, Shakeela Jabeen, had come from Norway just to see Shankar. “I got to know three days ago that he was coming to Pakistan,” said Jabeen, beaming. “He was coming to my homeland I had to be here.”
Finally, the wait was over and Shankar said that it was overwhelming to visit Karachi after eight years. Soon after, he began a session of serious and thought-provoking questions and answers, packed with humorous one-liners. He spoke in English and Hindi and kept asking the audience for Urdu equivalents during his one-and-a-half-hour-long talk.
Of love and onions
The first question was a predictable one: How to promote peace between Pakistan and India?
“There is real love between the masses,” he said. “But to increase it, there should be an increase in trade, exchange of culture, tourism, and, religious and political dialogue.”
When he entered Pakistan from the Wagah border, he saw onion-laden trucks coming here from India. “I wish that pyar (love) also arrived with piyaz (onions),” he said. “From the other end, I saw trucks with cement. Most of the buildings in India are made of Pakistani cement.”
He admitted that top intelligence personnel and others had tried to stop him from coming to Pakistan and told him that the country was ‘dangerous.’ “But I wanted to come,” he said pointing upwards. “My security is up there.”
He thought that Pakistan had not exploited its tourism potential properly and could also do with a yoga industry, citing the example of $29 billion industry in the US. He also said that Pakistanis should celebrate their differences. “Celebrating diversity should be the language of Pakistan.”
All about you
When the questions became related to personal well-being, Guru ji said that sympathising with others and helping the less privileged brought peace. When he was asked about self discipline, he said, “When you love something, you don’t need discipline. And I don’t agree that fear and greed instill a sense of discipline.”
To Shankar, a man’s worst enemy was his own mind and ego. “But, it is also his best friend,” he said, with a smile on his face. When asked about people who lust after money and power, the Guru simply said, “Smile at them. They are very poor.”
Equivalent of sex?
When a sex therapist asked him how important sex was for overall wellbeing, Shankar answered, “A moment of silence is equal to 1,000 units of sex. Meditation elevates you. You don’t need a body to rub against,” causing a ripple of laughter to go through the room.
Mass meditation
After the questions were over, Shankar proposed, “Let’s meditate. That’s our specialty.”
The lights were dimmed, the cameras were turned off and eyes were closed. The Guru recited the three golden rules of meditation. “To want nothing, to do nothing, and, to be nothing.”
There was silence in the hall for a whole 15 minutes. At the end of the session Shankar poured drops of shakti (power/peace) on to the arms of the audience. The drops, he said, were made from special herbs.
Farooq Sattar who had actively participated in the meditating session, eagerly climbed the stage to get a few shakti drops. “Salman Khan ki tarhan ho-jaon to baat hai,” he joked, referring to the beefy Bollywood hearthrob. Shankar poured the drops on to Sattar’s outstretched arms which he then tried to lower but couldn’t.
It was then that the spiritual guru asked for the time and was told that the clock had struck 12:30 am. “This is enough for tonight,” he said, with his perpetual smile.
Art of living officially opens
Early on Wednesday morning, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar also inaugurated Art of Living’s peace centre. He had inaugurated similar centres in Lahore and Islamabad before he made his way to Karachi.
“I hope this centre brings peace to the people. I hope thousands come here and find happiness,” he prayed, clad in white robes and an Ajrak around his neck.
Although the centre in Karachi has been offering courses for meditation, breathing and physical exercises for several years, Shankar officially launched it on Wednesday.
He asserted that similar peace centres should be set up all across Pakistan and announced that Indian doctors will be sent here to treat people for free. The Guru said that a clever man spends his time, indulging in music, poetry, jokes and wisdom, while the foolish man spends time fighting and arguing.
“Encourage tourism. You have homes everywhere. Invite people and go visit them,” he advised the volunteers while sitting with them after the ceremony.
While speaking to the media, Shankar said that it was important to reach out the extremists and criminals. “In jail, I have taught meditation to 0.3 million people,” he said. “We are not magicians and don’t change people overnight. We just try to help them.” Shankar added that his teachings were not class-restricted and poor people could get it for free too.
An elderly, Kalim Baakza, who had taken breathing courses at the centre three years ago, said, he had thoroughly enjoyed the session. “I do breathing and physical exercises every day. That course gave me a lot of energy and helped me to release my blocked emotions.” His sister Rani Farooq, with a tasbeeh (rosary) in her hand, chipped in, “Nothing can bring you happiness, until and unless you look inside yourself and meditate.”
Naushad Thariani, a full-time instructor at the Art of Living centre in Mumbai, was also happy to be in Karachi, finding it to be better and bigger than his last visit. Talking about his centre he said, “I wake up with a smile every morning. This place helps a person have a better and healthy life. It’s not for sad people.”

Indians who visit Pakistan as a visitor should not be taken seriously, as they are not diplomats or on official tour to Pakistan. But on the other hand, why do they talk about love between two countries, and exchange of cultural and tourism, and some other stuff. Don't they know anything about two-nation theory, what are the basis of this theory? Indian culture is different from us. We don't need their culture, but still it's being admired. We can solve all of our problems, if we read Quran, our own holy book, than listening to this ignorant fool, who lives and passes his time with false ideology.
lol. look at this: http://karachiupdates.com/v3/component/content/article/2-2009-07-03-13-16-07/13081-drghulam-murtaza-mughal.html
Hindus can never be well wishers for Pakistanis (the majority hindus, exceptions are there). That's a concrete fact, no one can change, no matter how much you close your eyes from the reality. India's presence in Pakistan is just for one purpose - the same purpose that they are working on from the day one. The destruction of their most hated rival - Pakistan.
@Mike:Guruji has been invited by the Art of Living people in Pakistan and i am sure his workshop was not held in mosque . Even in India the Art of Living workshops are held in dharamsahlas, community centers auditoriums etc but never in a temple, mosque, church or gurudwara. There is no religious content and no attempt to convert anyone. Have a open mind all the AOL teachers in Pakistan are Pakistanis and those that are Muslims they would most likely be pious Muslims. So in case u can attend the course please do so and i can assure u , it will be relaxing. However if you choose not to well no one is forcing anyone so take a chill pill and relax.
My opinion is that without solving core issues including Kashmir, water dispute & cross border terroism & infiltration (in FATA /Baluchistan) all such "Aman ki Ashas" will bury in Ashes.....
If you Muslims want peace, start by praying 5 times
@madhu: As long as you do not say that we should be one country, its ok to find common ground to build friendship. Let me tell you a secret...Pakistanis get highly offended when Indians say that we should be one country.....I have no problem with this as long as the name of that country would be "PAKISTAN"
that guru-ji is a wanker! it shows on his face, thats how he releases stress, he's calling taliban to destress, this guy is definately a propogandist because if taliban were stressed they'd be loosing the war not winning it!!!! or is this the real reason he wants taliban in afghanistan to destress because they are winning!!, actually he can take TTP his friends back to india! and teach them to destress there, Guru-ji atleast destress the population of pakistan by taking home your friends back home, if you guys are so lost that you cannot find peace because you do not practice spirituality then go for a jog that'll sort you out...
@sandeep limaye: A muslim preacher comes from where ever and preach to muslim in jama masjid therefore no problem. If he preaches in a temple then there might be problem if the temple has not invited to the muslim preacher. Your argument does not weigh much.
@Faraz: Ummah of Prophet Mohammad PBUH have made khalifah as no prophet is coming now. Each ummati is asked to spread the message of deen and to correct where ever somebody is swaying from the right track. So brother dont say to a muslim mind your own business. I hope you will ponder on this.
@Baqar Brother i am punjabi.
emphasized text You be the Judge & decide whether you must hear & follow Guruji or not.It has nothing to do with Religion or geographical boundaries. AoL is practised in over 151 Countries uincluding Iraq,Iran & China by over 300 million followers. From Notrth pole to South Pole Guruji has followers who are benefitted by his breathing techniques. Any harm in giving it a try? Jai Gurudev. BNRRao. 16.03.2012.
@Nida: Well Spoken Nida..... End of the day, it's people like you (on both sides of the border) who need to speak out and spread the feeling of Love and friendship..... And a small advice to all like-minded people in both countries - Please learn to ignore stupid, hateful messages.... remember there were and will always be a bunch of idiots in every community, group, etc.... The best way to negate the negativity propagated by such idiots is to ignore it and not react to it or try to counter it .... By doing this you will only play into their hands as nobody can win an argument with an idiot...... The ONLY reply one should give to such comments is - GET WELL SOON BROTHER / SISTER .... And even this reply should come from our hearts as they really are sick - having being influenced by negative people while they were growing up..... Once again my compliments to Nida for her effort to spread love and friendship :)
ET is getting more schizophrenic day by day.
A classic example of mu pai ram ram baghal mein churi, we Pakistani muslims respect ur religon and culture , it doesnt mean we have to accept it, we tolerate it because of teaching of Islam and thats about it. A piece of advice for Pakistani media, u r becoming a tool of Dajaal, is that ur choice! Think about it.
another facade in the garb of Aman ki Asha..
As the Co-Director of the United Kingdoms oldest British Muslim group and of Pakistani background myself I also use meditation and yoga - and yes I pray...
The words of the Guru are wise and we should gain wisdom and teaching from wherever we can to strengthen the bond between the Creator and His Creation.
Reading some of the negative comments above - I can only suggest that Pakistanis who regard themselves as Muslims should be confident of their Religion and cease behaving with such sillyness towards people who are different than them as we all - everyone of will be answerable to Allah swt and one of the main things we will be judged on is what did we learn and teach and how we were towards others.
Mohammed Abbasi Association of British Muslims
Disclosure: I have attended the Art of Living (AOL) course, have read some books by Sri Sri aka Guruji, know a few AOL folks and once in a while attend the sessions / practice the breathing techniques. I am not a full time or part time volunteer.
When I was in my early twenties, I used to think Mirza Ghalib was just some old Muslim fuddy-duddy who lived in the 1800's and wrote a bit of poetry. In my mid-twenties to late thirties, I experienced love, break-ups, death, financial hardships, etc etc. Now in my early forties, I sleep with my Divan-e-Ghalib and Lughaat by my bedside. I also taught myself Urdu. Only when you have experienced certain things in life, will you realize what people like Mirza Ghalib are talking about. Mirza Ghalib and learning Urdu did not make me a Muslim but it does fill my heart with love for mankind.
Usage of tools / techniques and the acquisition of knowledge does not cause a change in faith. Wearing a Shirt and Trouser or writing in English does not make a Pakistani an Englishman. Learning Karate will not make you Chinese but it will make you fit. The AOL courses will not make you Hindu or Indian nor is it designed to do so. We start our life with a breath... take millions of breaths during our lifetime and the cessasion of breath is death - so maybe there is no harm in some breathing techniques which help us observe our own breathing or exercise our lungs. For those worried about it affecting your faith - the AOL will have the same effect as sugar does in kheer or salt in a shorba. You will find your namaz more intense, you will find new meaning in the Qur'an, if you are a Sunni you will love your Shia colleague and if you are Baloch, you will love your Punjabi neighbor.
Given the centrifugal forces operating in Pakistan today, a little centripetal force like the AOL might help a bit. My 2 cents to my Pakistani brothers and sisters.
There are many ways in which different people react and explain an incident. Even if 15 people out of 100 gets positive vibrations from some good happening the HUMANITY will SURVIVE.
It is shameful to see this man's message being ridiculed like this. I personally say namaz and I do Art of Living. My AOL teacher has always encouraged us to say namaz and find the spirituality within me.
I have never been able to understand why it always has to be one or the other. His message is simply to breathe, to let go of your ego and enjoy each moment of life and be aware of it. I don't think that is different to what any religion preaches, including Islam. If his message e rubbish then you are implying that all these religions and their message is not worth much either. I wonder if people think twice before propagating hate as willingly as they do.
SO let go please. Be open minded, appreciate humanity and a message of peace. No one is asking you to change your belief system. And I admire the ET for covering his visit in great depth. Maybe, if we are forced and pushed to embrace diversity we will. Why is anyone who doesn't conform considered bad in this country?
Live and let live!
@Asad: By the way 'The holy Quran' belongs to the entire world. It is not a copyrighted product of a certain discipline... It belongs as much to an Indian as it does to any other Muslim in the world. So quit owning things. Nothing belongs to no one...
@Talha: If u piously do your namaz five times a day and at the end of it have even 50% of the love and affection for mankind that a good man like Abdul Sattar Edhi has then spiritually u are doing just great and u do not need to try anything else. However for lessor mortals like me ' art of living' is a means to achieve peace of mind , having a positive attitude and maintaining good health. It has nothing to do with religion and no one is trying to convert anyone. Before you classify anything as rubbish please learn something about it and if u are not inclined to do that then the least the subject deserves from u is a no comment . @asfd i dont think anyone has ever claimed that Guruji has supernatural powers.
Ravi is an impostor . He plays with words and feelings. He is an Indian Agent
Who is Maya Khan?
It is a great work Rabia. Though I didn't know about this event but after reading through your coverage I could feel myself there. It was a very good start of my day. Congratulations
dear Pakistanis you are world famous for your so called hospitality, what happened to that. some time before from Arabia one Muslim preacher came to India and lectured in jama masjid Delhi. no one thought that he is talking rubbish or why he came to India one more Muslim preacher from Pakistan came to Gujarat. no one felt insulted or threatened but here insulting comments about our guruji is made and ET is allowing that. shame on you guys
Well if the same message had been give by some tableghi dude I am sure it would not have garnered such an attention from ET.
@indian please stop talking about something you have no clue of it just makes you sound like a fool.
@Mike:
TOI isn't a top class news paper of india. it's just a tabloid which somehow has too much of readers.
if you want to read what india is all about, do visit THE HINDU, or even HINDUSTAN
@Talha:
Someone above compared you to Maya Khan. What an apt comparison!
Lord Krishna said to Arjun in Bhagwad Gita - "You will attain me through Yoga and meditation" :-)
If more and more Pakistanis get indulged into Yoga and meditation like the Westerners then most of them will start thinking like Hindus ...spirituality will win over religious practices and secular mindset will spring up overcoming the superiority complex of my religion is better than yours !!
@Talha: Because praying Namaz and doing stuff not to be done is hypocrisy while not praying Namaz and doing what the Quran says in the spirit of it is better than praying namaz.....
what a beautiful message by a human being to fellow human beings in pakistan! .I am sure even Jesus would have said the same thing and walked the same way with open arms of love and spread the message of love.
@ Ali Tanoli with this mentality dont complain when punjabis gets beaten in Balochistan
@Talha:
What's truly baffling is that you could call something rubbish without even testing it. The filthiest rubbish is prejudice.
Talha's point is very well made. As Zakir Naik said, Muslims already have the perfect book for perfect living - Quran. Their book not only describes the complete art but the full science of living for them as well. Five namazes a day does it for a society.
Ahsan : I think it is not "someone" who needs it. It is all the bearded mullahs, talibans, all the alphabetic soups of terrorists and their idiotic followers in pakistan who need it. Go and get on with the job of doing it.
Meditation has greater effects over the persons of the people and is very much necessary for personal development. The promotion of multiculturalism and acceptance of the 'other' is very much required for bringing in society the lost virtue of tolerance and peace. Anyone doing this must be encouraged and supported to get rid this society of the extremism and fanaticism. Humanity needs peace, joy and love.
@Talha: You pray your own namaz and stop assuming what othesr do or don't do because you are nobody to judge, only Allah is!! Mind your own business please. Everyone is a Maya khan now or tries to be.
Very well said Guru ji !
Indeed, We wish the same- May the sanity prevails ob both sides of border!
@Talha: Why this negativity? Is it because you feel that he represents Hinduism? He teaches breathing techniques and meditation which can be practised by anyone, although the origins may be in traditional Vedic-period texts of secular character. If he was a charlatan, he would find it difficult to attract followers in a country where people are brought up to look down upon and dislike anything Hindu. Open your mind, my friend.
I just wish that art of living can do away with the herbal shakti drops and other pseudo-science non-sense. Personal prayers, yoga and meditation has a lot to offer but do not pollute it with pseduo-science and personality cults of the guru (super natural powers with no basis in rationality), nor does it need all this to benefit the masses. It is a misconception that people are looking for superstitions and miracles when this life itself is a miracle, we just have to be aware. I hope someone from art of living is reading this.
@Talha : Why do you have such a problem with Guru ji or AOL. The people who went there went with their own will. Should they take your permission next time?
After reading most of comments, it feel like Pakistan is lost cause.
@Parvez Amin: You traitor you go with that smooth talker back to where he comes from. Have you ever read the Indian comments in times of India about Pakistanis. No top class paper will ever print that kind of material and you want to reciprocate.
@ationalist baloch: "selling their shoddy wares …" Oh yeah!!! He should have sold rocket launchers, AK47s, AK56s etc... Then people would be interested... Just sitting and keep yourself calm does not come natural to some and unfortunately is not as brave as blowing up something constructive!!
@Ahsan: The Taliban surely do... By the way so do the Hafeez Saids and the Mullahs...
The melodious azan of mosques, naats at enumerable Dargahs of Sufi Saints, the evening bells of churches and aartis of temples, the meditation of Namaz & Dhyanyog, all of them teach us Art of Living and provide us our connection with almighty. More we have peace of mind, more rational our thinking will be.
I have attended the basic course and i would like to tell all Pakistani brothers the breathing exercises and techniques when practiced give a lot of peace of mind. It has nothing to do with religion give it a try and you maybe surprised that something good can also come from India other than piyaz
Welcome thoughts. Let us reciprocate.
... there are many a charlatan like him ... selling their shoddy wares ...
... pack him ... and his so called art of living ... back to where it came from ...
May peace reign in every atom of our countries. My father studied in Lahore, my aunt and her family lived and taught there. We are of same flesh, blood-we speak same language, we wear similar clothes-then why do we feel separateness? Let us pray that Guruji's wishes come true! I know of a lot of our Pakistani friends who watch Swami Ramdev on television early every morning and practise Yoga and pranayam. They know of the immense benefits. Drop the differences and promote the common-ness. Jai Gurudev!
Can someone who attended this event tell me this:
Many of you probably don't pray namaz regularly (statistically speaking that is likely). Why do you not pray namaz but go to this event?
It absolutely baffles me; people having something infinitely better in their hands, throwing it away in search for some rubbish.
How many stories are you going to do on this rubbish ET?
someone needs a haircut and a bath.
Farooq Sattar and MQM need more of this calm medicine of india than any body else in pakistan.
