Include someone who possesses coaching skills: former cricketer Jalaluddin

Jalal suggests coach-hunt committee members unaware of modern techniques.

KARACHI:

Former Pakistan paceman Jalaluddin has called on the country’s cricket board to include at least one member, who is equipped with modern-day techniques, in the coach-hunt committee.

The committee, which was formed after the resignation of Waqar Younis, includes former cricketers Intikhab Alam, Zaheer Abbas and Ramiz Raja.

While the committee helped the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in finalising Dav Whatmore as head coach and Julien Fountain as the fielding coach, it is yet to finalise a replacement for Aqib Javed.

Aqib, who takes over as UAE head coach, quit his role of Pakistan’s bowling coach at the end of the England series.

Jalal, who has also applied for the position, said there was a need for at least the inclusion of one member who was a highly qualified coach.

“They’ve been top players but there’s a need to include a member who knows modern-day coaching,” Jalal, who is one of Pakistan’s highest qualified coaches, told The Express Tribune. “As far as I know, the trio does not have any idea on how to operate the softwares, named in the PCB’s advertisement [for the post of bowling coach], themselves.

Jalal, who is a level-III qualified coach from England and Australia, said that he has designed a presentation highlighting areas Pakistan bowling unit needs improvement in. “Talent is there but knowledge of the game is lacking.”

Whatmore should interview shortlisted candidates

Jalal suggested that current head coach Whatmore should be the one to finalise the bowling coach. “He should interview at least four to five candidates and then have a one-on-one. He won’t be biased and he is the better judge because he can identify who possesses the knowledge.”
