The ministry of defence has decided to levy a sum of Rs5,000 as yearly airport entry pass fee, to be charged from private sector organisations operating at the airports.

In a letter to the Airport Security Force (ASF) and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the ministry announced the levy of this fee. It stated that the fee is required to be deposited in federal government treasury.

The move has been widely opposed by the handling agencies and airport services.

While expressing their reservations, private service providers said the fee has been imposed on them arbitrarily. They vowed not to pay it.

The new state-of-the-art passes will have the latest technology features and they will carry an electronic data chip. They said that the ministry had decided to charge the fees to recover the expenses that will occur on the issuance of the card.

In view of the hostile reaction by private handling services, the ministry has deferred the implementation of the decision till March 31.
