Crimes against women

Letter March 11, 2012
The Missan Kot Buaa incident is a reminder of the shameful and horrible manner in which women are treated.

LAHORE: The disturbing news of the disrobing and beating of ten women and parading one of them naked around the village, by a mob in the village of Missan Kot Buaa is a reminder of the shameful and horrible manner in which women are treated. Incidentally, Meerawala, where Mukhtaran Mai was gang-raped, is in the same district of south Punjab. This cruel treatment is often meted out to women to exact revenge — but what is even more disturbing is that the state and government do not do much about this. So while we can pass all the women-friendly laws we want, that all doesn’t count for much unless these measures are implemented in practice.
