Karachi may lay claim to being the financial and economic capital of the country, but Lahori entrepreneurs appear to have taken the lead over their southern rivals. Lahore-based firms dominate Allworld Network’s Pakistan Fast Growth 100 list with the 41 companies to form the largest contingent from any single city, handily outdoing Karachi which has 33 companies featuring on the list.
The list is not – nor does it claim to be – an exhaustive compilation of Pakistan’s fastest growing entrepreneurial firms, but simply a collection of the most impressive from amongst the hundreds of companies that applied for the competition. But the dominance of Lahore firms on the list – which earn well over half the $1.4 billion in combined revenues of the 106 firms – suggests that perhaps more Lahori entrepreneurs are interested in the visibility and exposure to investors that comes with being part of the list.
The Pakistan 100 list is compiled by the Allworld Network, an initiative of three Americans, including Harvard University professor Michael Porter, to increase the profile of small, rapidly growing firms in emerging countries.
The concept behind the lists is called “visibility economics”: the hope that the additional visibility of being named as one of the fastest growing companies in the country will allow these companies to attract more investors and more talented employees, increasing their ability to create jobs and effectively compete around the world.
In addition to compiling country lists, such as the Pakistan 100, the organisation also compiles regional lists, such as the Africa 500, Asia 500, Eurasia 500, and Latin America 500. Pakistani firms did well in the Arabia 500, constituting about 14% (70 companies) of a list that included firms from at least 14 countries. Pakistan was second only to Turkey in representation on that list.
“The Pakistani companies that were part of the Arabia 500 are among some of the most sophisticated and impressive firms we have seen anywhere around the world,” said Deirdre Coyle, co-CEO and co-founder of the Boston-based Allworld Network.
The Pakistan 100 list will officially be announced on Friday and Saturday at the Pearl Continental Hotel, Lahore.
For instance, Faisalabad, the third-largest city in the country and ranked number one by the World Bank’s Doing Business in Pakistan report, has absolutely no representation on the list. Neither does any city in Balochistan. Islamabad has 12, Rawalpindi eight, Peshawar seven, Sialkot two and Sargodha, Kamoke and Multan one each.

Well done and keep up the good work.
Balochistan and Faisalabad conspicous by their absence !!! points to ponder for the organisers.
Lahore Lahore Aey.. Leken Karachi mein Lahore say bara siruf Johar hai.. :P
Good for Pakistan. Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad doesn't matter. What matters is youth of the country is progressing at fast pace.
Good. Lahore has made Pakistan proud :)
I agree with Sarmad. Lahore is great so as karachi. We as Pakistani are proud of our great cities. Positive thing is that Pakistan which is facing so much crisis is still able to produce such business. All the best for Pakistan.
Lahore Lahore Hai! We Lahori Entrepreneurs have set up businesses in Karachi to teach Karachites the game of quick and lasting growth. But lahore Lahore hai! Karachi is too fishy for business.
As the CEO of top company in the ranking I think the author has completely missed the point!
entrepreneurship in Pakistan is all about millionaire, billionaire fathers financing the business venture of their kids. Lahore has a lot more black and looted money than karachi. that's why the start up a lot more businesses. Karachi is mainly a middle class city who pay taxes. karachiites don't have so much spare cash to "lubricate" the bureaucratic pakistani system and risk their dear life long savings.
Obviously it's good that every city in Pakistan does well but we all know Punjab is improving yhe most because of the stability there and the governance of the party in power. It makes a big difference to have a pro business party with Shahbaz Sharif at the helm. All this talk about Paindoo only shows that some people are jealous of "paindoos" from Punjab who are known all over the world for their work ethic- especially here in North America where Punjabi is synonymous with hard working. @Pakistani Agnostic:Why bring up the talk that paindoos think they are better than other people because they are tall and fair and not short and dark. Sure I would rather be paindoo that someone who is ugly or lazy not because a Bengali or Hindustani looks like this or that.
This gives snapshot which companies are outperforming in which city. Lahore of Punjab and Karachi of Sindh are the best.
A good news. Certainly makes my day.
I am so proud of all the Lahori companies in this list. Bravo!!!
The name of the article is, Lahori entrepreneurs outclass Karachiites in all world Pakistan 100 list
well here a Pakistani is outclassing Pakistani, so if we feel like this, this means we are discriminating our own country.
Be united Pakistan Zindabad
Great Lahoris! And bravo Karachiites! Karachi could get much much higher if it was not sadly for the law and order situation in this beautiful port. Love Pakistan
We are one. Good healthy competition. I love Khi n Lhr and whole of Pakistan.
The link shared in the article or the site is displaying data of 2010 means rankings of 2011. where is 2012??? Its not recent.
The heading does not discriminate any city. It clearly says Lahore Entrepreneurs outclass, and not Lahore outclass Karachi. And, I am from Karachi!
For us all cities are important for Pakistan one way or other. Chill yar!
@Saud: We should not spread the word we don't know, Lahore has taxes to.
Ridiculous title! There is no rivalry here, just healthy competition and I am glad for that but very poor choice of title for the article. I am glad no one started the ethnic war here, Lahore or Karachi... Pakistan Zindabad.
Anyone who thinks that this article is 'dividing people' is clearly extremely insecure about their identity. Healthy competition between cities in the same country is normal...or is Pakistan not a normal country??
@wlie8: You forgot to add Islamabad but I still second you.
@anony: That's not a paindo comment anyways,we all know Lahore Lahore hai,oh and Islamabad bhi Islamabad hai:P
Karachi will fight back !! Last few years it was bleeding. Hopefully next election will change that !
Ch allah daad...these companies are not created in this four years of Noora league goverment..what kind of credit are you giving to CM..when it comes to load shedding...inflation and law and order you guys put all blame on central goverment..but when it is to get any credit it goes to you..if follwo your logic then why not give credit to PPP....they are the one in center goverment...PML N and PPP both have done nothing for this country..this is only the indivduals or individual companies trying there best in there own capacity..can you tell me any goverment policy to promote such business...I will be happy to listen that..
There is no law and order in Karachi, who wants to do business there. I.T companies usually work 24/7 with night shifts but with dismal governance and security threat, hardly anyone feels safe in Karachi.Blame goes to MQM which really didn't let Karachi took off in 90's else it would had been a mini Dubai by now, even more important then Mumbai at global arena, which was predicated that time. P.S I am from Karachi, feels sad for my city but still life moves on there.
I don't like the title at all .... Why dividing Pakistan ? We love Lahore as we love Karachi ... it's better for Pak economy so I m very happy :)
I agree to those who say its a biased article........ although i belong to lahore and am damn proud of it.... but its pointless to write such an article............. ET never wastes a chance to raise differences amongst us Pakistanis...... proven again!
Karachi and Lahore. We are United!!
As long as it is from Pakistan, makes me happy, whether Lahore, Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar or any other place.
From a Patriotic Pakistani
ET, why such a biased title, it is good for pakistan, it is not a competetion, nor are thier any southern northern rival!! please grow up!! and outclass? eight companies more is outclass? the title could have been lahore leads the way or lahore makes pakistna proud, the fact that you chose to make it a inter city is just a lil weird. you would still have gotten comments had it been otherwise!
on the news , am thrilled, this is the right step , good to start the morning with a postive news. my dena had said the future of the decade is in entreprenuership and pakistan will rise again if we allow entreprenuial spirit to prevail!! congratualtinos!!
@Pakistani Agnostic:
The bengalis were angry and resentful because urdu was declared the official language and not bengali.Punjabi was never declared the official language of pakistan.
People in Karachi have to pay taxes, Lahore is a tax free zone. They have a competitive advantage. If you know what I mean.
Prosperity of Punjab is prosperity of Pakistan! Thumbs Up =) (Karachiite)
@anony:
It's not paindu.one should be proud not ahsamed of one's heritage. paindu is just a slur used by racists who intend to demean and dehumanise a community.
@Syed: Finally we Karachiites have someone to compete with. Competition raises the bar and its good for the country. And hopefully we Karachiites will get on our toes and avoid falling into complacency. And you know who will win.....Pakistan, of course. Welcome to the arena....pa'aji. It's like Los Angeles versus New York always, and America wins.
Only narrow minded ethno centric peoples think in terms of Lahore this, Karachi that.
When anybody from any city of Pakistan win, the whole Pakistan wins. When any body from any cities from Pakistan lose, the whole Pakistan lose. Both Karachi and Lahore are Pakistani cities, not two independent countries. We are similarly proud if any one from Tando M Khan or Kala Shah Kaku or Landi Kotal winning.
Why do you have to compare Lahore and Karachi ? Couldn't it be written as Pakistani firms etc? STOP DIVIDING PLEASE !
Good to hear... Lets hope Karachi get a little rest from rural influx....i think Pakistan must have atleast four metropolises like karachi to cater to the needs of massive urbanisation
And then people wonder why Balochis, Sindhis, Pushtuns want to break away from Punjab. My Bengali friend once told me how his father was discriminated because of his dark color and weak physique in Islamabad before 1971. He told me because of Punjabis superiority complex- Pakistan will never remain a one unit for long
The brilliant leadership of CM Mian Shehbaz Sharif is paying off.
thats nice. healthy competition. (from a Karachiite)
Good....Finally we have 2 cities to help Pakistan.
Take a look at Lahore and Punjab in general - there is relative stability and prosperity compared to other parts of Pakistan. That's why it's not fair to compare the Punjab with other provinces in Pakistan.
Lahore Lahore Aey ..
NICE!
