The announcement came after The New York Times first reported in February that the US Central Command (CENTCOM) commander General James Mattis would be visiting Pakistan in an effort to repair ties between both countries.
Testifying at a hearing of the US Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday, General Mattis said that the US did need ground lines through Pakistan, and mentioned that he would be meeting Pakistani officials on his trip there in ten days.
Talking about Pakistan’s pending parliamentary review and US-Pakistan relations, General Mattis said that he remained optimistic that they would make progress in this regard.
Relations remain tense between both countries following a NATO airstrike on November 26, 2011, of last year that led to the death of 24 Pakistani soldiers.
General Mattis said that co-operation with Pakistan continues on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border after the NATO airstrike. He added that the border coordination meetings had been taking place at different levels.
In response to a question, General Mattis said that while there was still friction, they were making progress, and had exchanged Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in near border operations with Pakistan.
When asked by Senator Shaheen over the closure of NATO supply routes by Pakistan, General Mattis said that the US was currently sending supplies to Afghanistan partly by air, sea and through the Northern Distribution Network.
Reports on whether the US would issue a formal or private apology to Pakistan on the NATO airstrike remain unconfirmed.
In response to a question on Pakistan and their progress in acting against controlling the flow of ammonium nitrate used to make Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), General Mattis said that while it has been an area of frustration, US has had serious dialogue with Pakistan on the subject.
“They (Pakistan) have passed laws to enable them to make arrests that they could not make before and have put together a counter-IED strategy,” adding that he was optimism about progress in this regard, despite there being a need for further discussion with Pakistan on it.
The US General further said that there were a number of factors dominating the issue, including Pakistan’s control over FATA.
In his opening remarks at the hearing, Senator John McCain said, “In Pakistan our relations remain fraught by a series of set backs.” He added that Pakistan’s intelligence service continues to “support terrorist groups like the Haqqani Network.”

@David Salmon:
Fantastic, welcome onboard.
@WoW: Are you sure. USA at ‘ALL COST’ stops trade with Pakistan and imposes a ban on its banks. Like this situation?
Obviously you are not aware of the strength and resilience of Pakistan. No serious, unbearable harm will result if the US does what you fear. Really! The US administration has been highjacked by hoodlums from its Military Industrial Complex and they do not care two hoots about any one, including their own citizens. Always remember that Pakistan has enough food to suvive forever. As long as that is secure, and it always will be, you have nothing to fear from the US.
@Pakistan first: OK. * We will pay for the route, which I take it means we must pay for the road, too. * ditto * We will pay anything previously agreed to and shown to be a legitimate WOT expense, as per our auditors. Don't ask us to take the Army's word for it. * We will release funds when Pakistan's cooperation in concluding a stable Afghanistan peace agreement has been demonstrated. We aim to help you build a stable and prosperous country, but not if you persist in backing terrorism. * Kashmir can be settled on the same terms as Afghanistan: no cross-border terrorism. * We are sorry, but in wars stuff happens. Sorry about that, too. * By all means. Now what?
no need to resume NATO supply at all they've made enough damage in this region now they should literally get their long pointed nose out of this region its hurting, they better care to pay attention towards their own collapsing nation first & quit their ages old habit of poking their nose in others' internal affairs asap bcz we need a space now enough of this WOT we're sick & tired of it now Pakistan is almost destroyed in last few years our economy is totally doomed what else do they think we have left to lose now?
@BruteForce:
Accidental is not for 2 and half hours even after being told that its a pakistan army post, it was an attack on a regular pakistan army post and now the US soldiers in afghniastan has to face the music and thier government has to feel the financial pinch by using the northern distribution route. Plus there is not such thing as free lunch or in this case free F-16s, US is not that humble or friendly and is known for persuing its goals succesfully by money or terrorising countries with the ranting of war
@PT: In your opinion NATO supply should be re-opened now so that once again US' and NATO's troops could kill more and more Pakistani soldiers furtively intentionally to get the revenge of their the most ever worst defeat in Afghanistan but before the world unintentionally and mistakenly by using lame excuses. Sorry in my opinion NATO's supply routes now should never be re-opened at any cost because thus by blocking NATO's supply routes US' and NATO's troops' withdrawal chances from Afghanistan are more than re-opening the NATO's supply routes.
@Pakistan politics: NATO supply’s should not be resumed at any cost, for god sake get rid of USA
Are you sure. USA at 'ALL COST' stops trade with Pakistan and imposes a ban on its banks. Like this situation?
I just wonder what will the commentators, who vociferously object to the NATO supply routes , will do when Pak govt finally relents after accepting more money or more pressure. But I think it will happen
Just last month Pakistan received free US manufactured F16s and were mighty thrilled about it.
http://tribune.com.pk/story/338584/boosting-air-defence-f-16s-replace-americans-at-jacobabad-airbase/
Getting goodies from US is not a problem, but only when you have to do something back it is, right? Did you really thing those F16s were for free,eh?
Give all the F16s tomorrow and give back all the money US has given Pakistan and then talk about not helping the US out in Afghanistan. Otherwise you will sound as a hypocrite.
On another note, TTP killed 16 soldiers(also last month!!!) and nobody hears a whimper about it.
Muslims intentionally killing Muslims is not a problem, but US accidentally killing Pakistanis is serious matter. Correct?
I thought he said he didnt need Pakistani supply routes anymore and can fight the war without them, seems like the general came to terms with the ground realities.
No NATO supplies through Pakistan. NO! NO! NO! NEVER! NEVER! GO AWAY USA! GO BACK TO USA! NEVER COME HERE! If you come back in a million years it will be too soon. If you don't understand this plain English, I will be happy to use any language of your choice.
@Cautious: Dear Cautious we seem to have a problem. You have indicated that the Pakistan military will make all decisions on behalf of the Pakistan Government, and we know, without a shadow of doubt, that President Obama waits up at night for his Israeli phone call from Mr. Netanyahu who gives him his instructions for the next day, so I would say that General Mattis will be between a rock and a hard place at the conference in ten days time. The General will not really be sure who in Pakistan is agreeing to what, and he will not really be sure if he should do what President Obama asks him to do until he has confirmed with Mr. Netanyahu (the ex furniture salesman) that what he is being requested to do really came from Israel.
Just watch how quickly our own liberals will ignore parliament and democracy when the order comes from Gen. Mattis.
@PT
this way our poor FC in Balochistan will face BLA,BLF equipped with sophisticated weapons.
Yanks Out!
General I don’t think when you request for a supply route you should be dictating things to us, here us what we think US should extend to Pakistan as a good will gesture in return for the land supply route.
Pay for the route along with all other taxes Pay for the re-construction and maintenance of road infrastructure that your supply vehicles have wrecked havoc on earlier Help Pakistan on diplomatic front to solve Kashmir as Pakistan is helping you solve Afghanistan mess Re-start all the funding for development projects Pay the war fund that Pakistan army has already spent chasing your “high value targets” Stop covert CIA operations in balochistan and sindh Stop funding TTP and other anti Pakistan proxies Stop indian sponsored terror activities on pak-afghan borderGeneral, without the above mentioned Pakistan army and its people would never allow a single box of chocolate to pass through to US forces in Afghanistan, you need to understand our needs so we can understand yours
Apologize and then pay to use the Pakistani roads to re-supply NATO and US troops in Afghanistan. Nothing is for free.
Has he apologized yet to the families of the soldiers martyred?
NATO ground route supply through Pakistan will NOT be opened at any cost, unless US President Barrack Hussein Obama will tender a written apology to Government of Pakistan, as well as to the family members of those innocent solders who were killed in the NATO air attack on November 26, 2011.
In addition to this, Obama should also pay monetary compensation to the bereaved families of 24 soldiers without any further delay.
The only to end this bloody war is to never open NATO supplies. PERIOD!
Army, Zardari and Co want to make some money out of this. Enough money to be made for everyone!
running out of toilet paper?
It would appear that General Mattis doesn't believe that this matter is really up to the Parliament - that makes sense because foreign policy matters are suppose to be made by the executive branch not the legislative branch. Unfortunately in Pakistan foreign policy is actually done by the military which is why the USA sent a General.
Nato Supply Route Should be opened but with this time Pakistan should ask something in return. For example nato supply route which Pakistani people think is a threat should be converted into strength. For example there should be clause stating that 25 % of the supplies should pass by Gwadar port to Kalat & through to Chaman. This would also bring economic activity in Balochistan and prosperity to the poverty stricken region to some extent ( also what congressman Dana Rohrabacher proposes i.e. to bring prosperity to the region)
Why are we even considering allowing the US to use our territory to conduct war in this region? We should tell them to buzz off. We know from repeated experience that we always end up losing no matter how it may seem at the start. The US is not unreliable at all...they are reliable in the way that all imperialist powers are....they will bully, they will mistreat, they will secretly work against us, they will do everything in their own selfish interest at our expense and call it a friendship. We're fools for not rejecting all US proposals outright!
NATO supply's should not be resumed at any cost, for god sake get rid of USA
