FLORIDA: Rory McIlroy clinched the US PGA Tour’s Honda Classic to take golf’s world number one ranking, making him the fourth player to take the top spot since long-term incumbent Tiger Woods was unseated on October 24, 2010.

Northern Ireland’s McIlroy carded a one-under par 69 for 12-under 268, keeping his nerve after Woods surged to the clubhouse lead with an eight-under par 62 that eventually left the 14-time major champion tied for second place with Tom Gillis on 10-under 270.

“It was always my dream to become the world number one,” said McIlroy. “But I didn’t know I would be able to get to this so quickly. Hopefully, I can hold onto it for a little longer.”

McIlroy is followed by two Englishmen, Luke Donald in second and Lee Westwood in third place, while Woods moved back into the top 20 on the back of his finish in the Honda Classic and is now placed 16th.
