Double standards

Letter March 05, 2012
Did these suicide bombings and attacks not damage pages of the Holy Quran?

JUBAIL, SAUDI ARABIA: There has been a string of letters and articles in the media, all very rightly saying that a mere apology from America on the abhorrent issue of burning of copies of the Holy Quran by American soldiers at Bagram base in Kabul is not sufficient. America should understand that sentiment on this issue runs high and that the incident needs to be dealt with in a proper manner.

That said, may I ask a question — which may seem troubling to some. We have seen countless series of suicide bombings and attacks and many have taken place inside mosques and imambargahs. Did these attacks not damage pages of the Holy Quran and if that is indeed the case then why did we not react in the same way to such equally heinous attacks? There will be some people who will accuse CIA/Mossad/RAW for these attacks but let us call a spade a spade. These suicide bombings are carried out by none other than local people who are indoctrinated to think that their actions will reward them in the afterlife.

I am only raising this point because we often tend to blame the West for its double standards and that is well and good. But we usually fail to see the blatant double standards in our own societies and pretend as if they don’t exist.
