A key focus of our work is education. We know how important giving their children a good education is for so many people in Pakistan. Education is the single most important factor which can transform Pakistan’s future. It boosts the economy, broadens outlooks, and offers a brighter future for children who may otherwise be on the streets. That’s why education is UK’s top priority for Pakistan.
Pakistan faces an education emergency. More than 17 million children are not in school. That is half the adult population, and the population is expected to increase by more than half again in less than 40 years. Two thirds of women cannot read or write. Pakistan is way off track from achieving the Millennium Development Goal of universal primary education.
By 2015, the UK will support more than four million children in school, recruit and train an additional 90,000 teachers, provide more than six million school text book sets, and work with the Government of Pakistan and society to further build commitment to improve the education system in Pakistan. We are working with the Government of Pakistan at federal and provincial level to deliver better quality and more widely available schools, and to improve management and accountability in the education sector.
And linked to this is nutrition. Children can’t learn well if they are too hungry to pay attention, or have been impaired by prolonged and repeated malnourishment. So improving nutrition will be a central part of our work. The UK is expanding basic health services at the community level focusing on family planning, nutrition, and healthcare for women and children. We aim to prevent half a million children becoming under-nourished in the Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa regions.
There is a real sense of excitement in our office about the programmes we are working on, which will make a real difference to the lives of the people in Pakistan. By 2015, thousands of children in Pakistan will be going to school and learning how to read and write for the first time. I have no doubt that Pakistan has the potential to meet the needs of all its citizens and UKaid will help Pakistan to unleash its potential.
So, there is much to celebrate about our partnership. To find out more about UKaid please visit our Facebook page, follow us on Twitter and share your personal stories on the connections between our two nations.

This aid is not a one way traffic. We also contributed in British life by sending cooks, taxi drivers, shop assistants, religious scholars etc.And also build so many masjids.
George. Thanks for sharing the UK's contribution in the development of Pakistan, particularly in education. Education is a key for improving all the indicators and prosperity of the country. Thanks for all your support and all the best
Relations between the peoples of Pakistan and the United Kingdom are strong and yes Pakistan needs to focus on improving its educational system and if the UK can assist with expertise in this regard then its more than welcome.
How Foreign Aid Helps Promote Corruption in Pakistan.
It helps these rulers manage to keep running the country. If Pakistan didnt get Aid/or any sort of loan. Yes I expect things to get really bad at first. But then hopefully this will result in a change of power...you can't run a country without money.
And hopefully people will realize how bad things are and will vote for a different party.
Some of the posters above are a thankless bunch. Those of us who acknowledge the importance of education do appreciate the steps UK is taking to help us build a better future for our country.
@Sajida: In spite of the sad home conditions they are doling out millions for your good.Should you not thank them and not criticize them.???? Kya fitrat hai aap ki?
I think we will be better off if authorities in UK returns back that money which our politicians/businessmen/and government servants have illegally transferred into their country. Anyhow we are very hard-skinned people who seldom thank their friends for any favor.
This approach british follows is nothing but to protect britain from terrorism creeping into UK via british pakistani relatives .
British expect Aid to buy them some trade contracts..So beware. We Indians faced some bad moments with British Aid :)
The British government should play a constructive role in helping the Pakistani government become self dependent. Aid is welcome but it would be better if Pakistan can finance its own concerns.
Than you for your great work though.
Certainly learnt something new from your article. Children born anywhere don't need to pay the price of failure of their nation states. They have every right to get better education. Education and meritocracy is all that we need to re-build our country. Thanks for your noble effort.
Thank you British people for helping build Pakistani education system. The focus should be either vocational training or masters level education. Both of them much more imp and can play a role in real dev. For masters, they may select few UK universities and local for vocational
@ deb, AMEN.
good to see that 1/568 of the money stolen during colonial days is being invested back!
Don't worry sir.Every cent will be paid back by British Pakistanis through their extra curricular activities played out at London tube or bus station or any place of their choice.
Isnt it shameful that we leave no stone unturned to ruffle our feathers like fools, boasting about our N status, or the billions we spend every year in buying useless toys for generals, while like beggars take aid from the country that ruled our population for 250 years? India has categorically rejected official UK aid long back... why dont we stop begging to west and use the money spend on weapons in children, education, health....
George, As commendable and indebted we will remain for your efforts, the fact remains that only state machinery can change the status of education in Pakistan. This will only come forward when we don't have a Prime Minister that is a prisoner-in-waiting, defending a President who cares nothing but holding onto power.
Having said that, as a citizen of this country I can certainly acknowledge the gratitude for your work.
