Medical care: Pakistan’s first ICU for Thalassemia patients unveiled
It is a project of the Afzaal Memorial Thalassemia Foundation and was sponsored by the government of Japan.

The country’s first Intensive Care Unit for Thalassemia and cancer patients was launched at a modest ceremony at the Children’s Cancer Hospital on Wednesday.

The CEO of the Afzaal Memorial Thalassemia Foundation, Dr Asim Qidwai, dedicated the project to the patients and their families. “We can’t accommodate all the patients,” he said. “But we will try our best to provide treatment to those who come to us.”
The foundation was formed 10 years ago and has been providing services to Thalassemia patients ever since. It also started the country’s first eye and heart clinic. According the Consul General of Japan, Masaharu Sato, it was a pleasure to equip the ICU with ventilators, infusion suction machines and other equipment worth Rs9.5 million.
