CAIRO: Egyptian security officials said the man they arrested at Cairo airport on Tuesday believing him to be a senior Al-Qaeda leader is an Egyptian extremist wanted in his homeland not an Al-Qaeda operative.

"He is wanted for involvement with the Al-Jihad (group). He is not Seif al-Adel," said a source at the National Security apparatus. Officials and state media earlier said the man was the senior Qaeda militant Seif al-Adel. The officials did not say why the Egyptian militant flew to Cairo airport.

An airport official said he arrived on an Emirates Airline flight from Pakistan with a stop-over in Dubai.

Security officials said the extremist was arrested after presenting a travel document at customs and taken into custody by the National Security apparatus.

To the editor - thank you for restoring the original wording of my comment.

Iron hand | 12 years ago | Reply Well now the story has been changed - now claiming it wasn't al Adel after all, so maybe that explains why he wasn't arrested in Pakistan or Dubai. He must have been in Pakistan for some routine jihadi training - nothing extraordinary and no reason to stop him at the airport.
