The incident took place during rush hour within the limits of the Shah Qabul police station in one of the most crowded areas of the city. However, the assailant still managed to escape.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations, Peshawar, Tahir Ayub, talking to the media at the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH), identified the Chinese national as Jiang Hua, 40, and her Pakistani escort as Mohammad Suliman Shams, 25, a resident of Nasir Bagh.
Ayub said unidentified motorcyclists opened fire on them and escaped from the scene. “Both were shot in their faces,” Ayub said, adding that the police were investigating the incident further.
Eyewitnesses said that a man donning a white shawl fired four shots and then slipped through Jehangir Pura towards the Qissa Khawani Bazaar. Eyewitness Jamilur Rehman told The Express Tribune that there was only one attacker and that he was on foot. The slain were taking pictures when they were attacked, he added.
SSP Investigation, Peshawar, Umar Riaz also confirmed that there was one assailant and that he was on foot.
Riaz said the woman had arrived in the country on a tourist visa. He said that police recovered tourism department and Shalimar garden brochures from her luggage, besides a camera, $100 and Rs4,000.
Shamsul Arifeen, father of slain Suliman Shams, told reporters at the LRH that his son had no enmity with anyone, and that the killing was a result of ongoing lawlessness. Arifeen said his son was a student at the Lahore University, adding that he was not aware where the woman was staying.
This was the second attack on Chinese nationals in Peshawar. Three Chinese were killed in the Landai Sarak area of Charsadda Road by assailants in July 2007.

@nationalist baloch: our economy is so good that we have plenty of time to read news papers of the world with interest and learn what is happening in the world. Thanks for noticing
Amjad : Pure BS. Whether it is pakistanis or afghans or Indians, it is Pak govt responsibility to get to the bottom. This kind of denialism and pointing finger elsewhere is not going to get you anywhere. The rest of the message on Pak or PKP's culture to safeguard the guests etc has nothing to do with my message posted earlier
@ Khan: people are sad and praying for him in different parts of the country. He was a fine man. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Its his first night in the grave let's pray for him.
@Nobody: Thanks dear.............. Suleman was such a nice young boy, every one in his village is so sad. Suleman is SHAHEED, will be remember forever.
@TightChuddi: she was on a research, and where she was shot dead, was famous books market, Suleman Shams who also was killed was her interpreter and assisting her for research work on pukhtoons or pukhtoonistan.
@vasan: India might be slightly better but not much in apprehending, prosecuting and punishing Murderers who unfortunately live among community. Scores of people including police and victims know them and nothing is done. Example: Riots that killed Sikhs (Delhi) and Muslims (Gujarat). 10 years have passed by and cases are still in court
@vasan: Yes it is the Pakistani government's responsibility to protect foreigners in our land. Moreover it is a fundamental aspect of local Pakistani culture is this case PKP's Pakhtunwali to safeguard guest. That's why I doubt local Pakistanis carried this out but rather foreign agents who often come in from Afghanistan and take orders from Indian masters.
LOL I have no clue how Kashmir lands up in every discussion thread. I'll also drop the usual piece of advice. Just forget about Kashmir you guys. It probably was within your reach in 70s or 80s but that time has gone, the world has moved ahead, there is hardly any international support. Your obsession with Kashmir has made Pakistan a mockery internationally. You cannot defend your own borders, with ariel drones killing over 30,000 Pakis (its like a genocide!), and there is hardly you can do anything about it. Your sovereignty is almost non existant. Try saving your own people first, as their problems are far graver than those of Kashmiris.
May The curse of Allah Almighty be on all these terrorists who are killing innocent people every passing day. My condolences to the Chinese family and the Pakistani escort.
@Shantanu G * I live in kolkotta but we Muslims are one my heart throbs for Pakistan. *
Shantanu- If you have to lie atleast try learning the spelling of the city you claim to reside in. Being a liar is bad but being a liar with bad spelling is simply pathetic
Vasan you are spot on. Whatever Vasan has said may please not be confused with the Kashmir Issue. Just read his post and its simply a very rational & honest thought. We need to have a Pakistan where there is hardly a crime reported, where we are contesting at all international levels and are in the news for all good reasons, where justice is provided in time without bias, where metros, trains and super trains run accross the cities and countrysides, where industries are running, where playgrounds and stadiums are full, where each and every citizen enjoys equal rights and priviledges irrespective of his ethnic, religious or any other background which actually is the true essence of a real Islamic State. And as Martin L. King said "I have a Dream"...Yes, we all have 'this dream'!
salute father of slain guy. his spirit and temperament after his son assasination.i heard his sot.May Allah rest his soul in peace
My dear brother its just a new, news for the world but you were a valuable asset for us. we will never forget your charm, your smile and your intelligence. we will be always missing you. May your soul rest in peace
@vasan:
so it is true that ghandhi died because he favored fair solution to pakistan independence. To this day kashmiris are dying for independene.
What india did was for selfish reasons. Not abide by cabinet mission plan one or the other.
To this day there is no united india nor divided. because pakistan did not get freedom and independence they deserve. Nor kashmiris are united with india. india is deaf to kashmir.
the independence was all about interest of india itself not 1/4 of british india northwest. the reason why india does not want solution for dispute. It does not favor kashmir or pakistan but it self for selfish reasons. Thanks to india afghanistan turmoil could not escape from afghan soil. Now pakistan & kashmir has swallowed this poison as well.
that is the cause of afghan turmoil spreading from afghan to pakistan kashmir & into india.
Suleman Shams, my friend, who died in this incident was a student of GCU Lahore. He was a national level athelete. May Allah rest his soul Amen
Amrood Quraishi
Do not spread fitnah. Chinese friends are our brothers. They gave us the bomb, support us against our enemies India and Israel. I live in kolkotta but we Muslims are one my heart throbs for Pakistan. Pakistan Paindabad.
It must be investigated what was a Chinese woman doing with a local male escort...I suspect foul play here.
... these Indians seem to be very faarigh ... have nothing to do except sit on the net and while away time ... looking at Pakistani papers ...
... their economy must be very poor and unable to give them work ...
... our Frenemies and Neighbourly Enemies deperately trying to spark off another cycle of violence ...
... have not been successful ... but they keep trying in vain hope ...
@Ali Khan:
18 shia were also killed today... afsos they were not chinese and will not be getting any justice thus
vasan: due stop the speculations and grow up. all i see you doing here is spreading hatred. No wonder aman ki asha irks me
Jandollah the righ wing of TTP has got fresh funding from the traditional anemies of Pakistan to de-friend Pakistan from Iran and China.
