LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday issued a pre-admission notice to PPP leader Dr Babar Awan, the chief election commissioner and the attorney general, on a writ petition challenging the acceptance of Awan’s nomination papers for senate election.

The court issued this order on the petition filed by advocate Shahid Javed Jami and appointed senior lawyers Salman Akram Raja and Ali Zafar as the amicus curiae to assist the court on the next date of hearing, February 28.

The petition states that Awan has assets not accounted for in his income tax returns, adding that he was not paying agriculture income tax despite holding agriculture land and equipment worth millions of rupees. Jami also said that Awan had ridiculed the judiciary for which the Supreme Court had already suspended his legal licence. He said Awan was registered as a voter in Rawalpindi but resides in Islamabad.
