Badami bagh: LHC stays shifting of Bus Stand
Assistant advocate general told the court that the bus stand was being shifted to reduce pollution in the Old City
LAHORE:
Justice Muhammad Khalid Mehmood of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday stayed the shifting of the Badami Bagh General Bus Stand, on a petition challenging the move. During Tuesday’s hearing, an assistant advocate general told the court that the bus stand was being shifted to reduce pollution in the Old City, which is home to many historical monuments, and for the convenience of passengers. He said that the bus services at Badami Bagh would be shifted to three locations Shahdara, Gajju Mata and Thokar Niaz Beg. At present, a bus stand is being developed at Thokar Niaz Beg only. The petitioners argued that the bus stand employed 20,000 people and ran 3,500 buses and the employees and passengers would be hurt by the move. The GBS is located over 282 kanals and has been operational since 1962, according to the petitioners. The court stayed the shifting of GBS, saying that the move could not be made till the three replacement bus stands were completed. The petition, filed by Tariq Mehmood and others transporters, named the Punjab government, district administration and others as respondents.
