Just look back over the years and see the lies and damned lies that we have been told, specially when the country has been led into catastrophes directly because of the Deep State’s own doings. If it was East Pakistan a half-century ago when that part of our country was treated like a colony and our Bengali compatriots like second and third-class citizens which moved them to hate West Pakistan (and its hapless people), it is Balochistan today where every second week broken and bashed and shot-through-the-heart bodies are dumped, making the Baloch hate the (yes, hapless) Punjabis.
Amid all of this, the Deep State goes on stupidly and blindly and cruelly, doing what it does best: ham-handedly following its own narrow and blinkered ‘strategic’ policies that have all but destroyed our country. Nothing demonstrates, yes I will say it again, this foolish cold heartedness than the fast-unravelling case of the Adiala Eleven for which kudos to My Lords the Chief Justices of Pakistan and of the KPK High Court.
Felicitations too, to Hamid Mir, for hosting two shows on the subject just two days apart, in which most heart-rending details of the tribulations of the families of the Eleven; the apparent murder, what else?, of four of them, and the death of the mother of one who has died and two who are still prisoners, came out in vivid and tortuous detail. I cannot say it any better than this report in this newspaper of record, of February 15, 2012:
“Within 24 hours of meeting her two children, previously ‘missing’ prisoners in the Adiala jail saga, Rohaifa, the petitioner in the shocking case, died of cardiac arrest on February 14. After a sleepless night following the meeting, 60-year-old Rohaifa developed heartache. She had earlier witnessed the disturbing sight of her sons, Abdul Majid and Abdul Basit, looking emaciated in tatters, with urine bags protruding out of their trousers. ‘She kept talking about Majid and Basit and was weeping since she returned after the meeting,’ said one of Rohaifa’s five sons, Abdul Shakoor. Three of them were among the 11 men who went missing from Adiala jail. They were later found in the custody of intelligence agencies. Rohaifa had already suffered an earlier heartbreak. Last month, of the 11 missing prisoners, four bodies were discovered in Peshawar. One of them was her other son, Abdul Saboor.”
While the death of Rohaifa Bibi is most upsetting, what shook me was what one of the small children of one of the prisoners who is still alive said on Mir’s first show, a day after he met his father at the Supreme Court. His father was a bag of bones the little eight or nine-year old boy said, due to the actions of these “beyghairat” (shameless, without honour) people. The hate and the rancour in the young lad was frightening to behold. What will he become when he grows up I asked myself with angry tears in my eyes too? A suicide bomber? A ‘jihadi’ intent on doing the greatest harm to whoever comes in his way, to avenge his father’s torture?
And who could blame him? Even the Honourable Chief Justice, a man who has seen it all in a long and distinguished career in the judiciary said that the sight of the prisoners invoked “the fear of God” in him! One report said the prisoners were kept in a room with no windows in the cold of Parachinar, with just the shirts on their backs. Another that all of them had blisters on their bodies. Still another that all were ill with various maladies principal among them renal failure.
For God’s sake what is going on, sirs? Are you not even answerable to the Almighty? Are these not His beings? Your lies about them being taken away by terrorists from Adiala have been exposed over and over again, and yet you have the gall to put the following on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlwiD4EILkE&feature=player_embedded
Come now, no feigning innocence: who else would have access to the information in the clip; the gruesome photographs? There is time even now. Give up your jihadi policies, rein in the ‘Tullis’ and the Hameed Guls and the Difaa-e-Pakistans, and mayhap our country will become normal again. And answer this one question: Why weren’t these people even charged in all the years they were in your custody?
P.S. If any of you, sirs, had an iota of decency you would resign, BMW 7-Series or not.

The 'State' would have us believe that the tortuous deaths of the Eleven wasn't without merit and was necessary to thwart the enemies of our country.
We should not let claims to patriotism cause us to look the other way, because the 'country' referred to here is not Pakistan.
The only 'country' that the state agencies defend, are the political and private economic fiefdoms owned by feudal lords and mafias.
This is the reason that now people have started questioning whether Pakistan was created for democratic civilian government or for our Armed Forces. The Oath taken by them does not allow any acts which directly invokes Article 6 of our constitution but they do so and our courts willingly accepts the take-overs. Courts are even now under their siege whether one accepts it or not.
you have been saying and writing the mind of saner elements of scoeity all along, and once again you have written what is required and how much we are being misled by our misdeeds in past, you can not fool every one all the time. our powerful peoples should listen to the voice of the sane ones other wise things can turn to a nasty episode once again.
@KS _ For your blinkered soul
in September, 1970, J. Edgar Hoover wrote a secret memo which pithily explained the difference between criminal investigators and spies: the “purpose of counter-intelligence action,” it stated, “is to disrupt, and it is immaterial whether facts exist to substantiate the charge.”
Terrible ,what is happening in Pakistan is very sad .
@Nadeem
We all must have sympathies with the families of missing persons but at the same time we should not forget the heinous crime they have committed against people of this country.
Have they really committed 'heinous crimes'? And what if they haven't? Take a look
http://www.dawn.com/2012/02/11/the-baloch-who-is-not-missing.html
Dear Sir, your advise to rein Tullis, Hammed Guls and Diffae Pakistan as usual has gone to deaf ears.
We all must have sympathies with the families of missing persons but at the same time we should not forget the heinous crime they have committed against people of this country. Unfortunately, our nation has very short memory they forgotten target killings of common people, suicidals on security agencies and public places, slaughtering of human beings like animals etc. Our paid journalist and media dont have courage to write against them / organize TV show because they know that it will cost them very dear. Are you ready to set them free to do all this?
It seems the illegal arms of the law are out to outdo America, which tortured Iraqi prisoners in special cells on the island close to Cuba. The mere report of the agony of a mother who died of cardiac arrest unable to bear the torture endured by her sons brought tears to my eyes. A 'mother' is a universal symbol of pure love, no matter which country and religion she belongs to! Who gives human beings (all officials should be) the right to treat another less than one?
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto has much to answer for.Besides the famous 1970 pronouncement: "idhar hum, udhar tum", 1973 dissolving of ANP Governments and putting its leaders in Sukkur jail, his second amendment of 1974, whereby he transformed an entire community that had, since the birth of this country, been a member of the majority into a minority, has after that date done much disservice to the nation. It has been the cause of strife, death and destruction and encouraged and defined bigotry as well as intolerance.
@anonymus: dear, don't go to extreme, on one side one must not condone the kidnappings, torture and gruesome acts but on the other side don't ever try to damage your intelligence setups. you just cannot imagine how these organisations protect the country being first line of defense. Last year some indian news papers carry the news that Indian RAW had allocated 2 billion dollars to defame and to subdue the ISI. and now suddenly you see a surge of hatred spreading against ISI. i think the Agency is also providing the fuel to burn the fire but at least we should be patriots not to support enemy's cause and deal with agency's follies under cover. By any means i am not suggesting covering up but our parliament should take up the challenge through OVERSIGHT COMMITTEES as is the norm in the demcratic countries of the world,
KS Sir you are true patriot. there are some brain washed people who will not agree you .if they donot under stand logic even after losing half of the country how can u help them.
It is matter of time sir unfortunately. Recent example is south Sudan who was rich in resources and finally separated form sudan due to lack of vision. Once you push the people other will pull them.
There are many hate monger who speak against civilians here. They don't quote any other country where their system of choice is showing wonders.
Civilans rulers are hateful but still better than gunmen. God bless you.
KS...Sir..I agree with yr analysis on the subject of cruelty by the ISI...but knowing too well that 2 wrong cannot make one right...but we hv ample incidents in civilian setups, which are equally horrifying....& are very condemnable too.It is a very normal thing within the feudal / tribal system where there is no law but are ruled by their own law & are equally horrowfying e.g unleashing dogs on poor peasants & on to the poor women folks..to name few incidents of horrowfying nature. Such incidents need to be exposed & condemed too, Sir, .appreciate yr understanding.
KS is a true patriot who dares to expose the almighty institution of Pakistan. The country who had suffered loss of its half due to barbaric handeling of its citizens has learnt no lessons but are bent upon repeating the same mistake with likelyhood of same results. The deep state should stop patronising the jihadis, spend less on defence and stop extra-judicial killings to put Pakistan back on rails.
@Indian: I totally agree with you .. I am not saying there isn't corruption in other countries .. my point was that even if they are corrupt what has Army rule given to us ... havn't they acted to address all the issues we have IF its only politician's fault ... Mr Berlusconi was PM of Italy many times and was as corrupt as Zardari or may be more .. but Army never overthrow his government instead waited for people to do that.
Shall we now stop protesting Guantanamo Bay detentions and the fate of Daughter of the Nation PLEASE?
Brutally Honest Article. Inshallah, the people who did this, will pay. Curse of the Almighty Allah (PBUH) be upon people who are doing these cruel and inhuman act.
Which ruler of Pakistan allowed and established political wings in intelligence agencies? One should know that intelligent people never torture any body but they have other means based on scientific methods. How many Intelligence agencies are working in Pakistan to protect and safeguard interests of citizens with what mandate and with what financial powers and their budget? I request KS to please write another article on the subject. All appreciations for your touchy article, Mr. KS. I also request any other writer to please expose other institutions or individuals, who have gun`s power on their back in this country, and how do they treat their brother citizens.
@Khan (SR): " politicians are corrupt and incompetent and we do have all those ills that you have mentioned so the question is Why hasn’t Army done anything to address these issues .. " Just one thing brother - Show me one country in the world which does not have corruption... Even those countries like NewZealand, Singapore and Switzerland which happen to be one among the top ten least countries of the world house banks which suck out black money from from other countries.... We India now know this... When your own people loot you and stash up that money in these so called less corrupt countries of the world, they don't need to loot their own people... The actual problem of Pakistan actually is the 'establishment' meddling its nose in the civil life... How much so ever corrupt, a civilian govt gives you the right to voice your concern, Military rulers are not used to take orders from civilians...
@faraz: The reason is obvious .. every one knows this country is controlled by the Army only and they have absolute power that no one else can have .. politicians are corrupt and incompetent and we do have all those ills that you have mentioned so the question is Why hasn't Army done anything to address these issues .. It was Army's decision to host millions of refugees for decades, gave them free shelter, equal treatment, free education & healthcare and yet they despise us. The reason for corruption in the country is mainly due to corrupt politicians but every other single mess is only and only due to Establishment's myopic policies .. Instead of meddling in the affairs of Afghanistan they could send back refugees, close the border and have equal relations with them which could have boosted our economy. They didn't open any educational institutions in Tribal & remote areas to weaken the feudal system which they could. Politicians couldn't tax farmers for their own political reasons but What was stopping Army from not taxing them when they have ruled for around 35 years Why couldn't they make a single curriculum when they could? Had they concentrated on population control and literacy rate, we could easily abolish FATA and all those people who are getting fooled by Bugtis would have known that those are the same Sardars who gets quiet every time they are in the government but start shouting for independence whenever its Army rule, once own pockets are getting empty.
@hammad: Sir, today the politicians have the power, what they seriously lack is the will to do what is right not only as far as the civilian-military imbalance is concerned but for the overall country as well.
the only thing I can do is to think what can I do and still getting nothing.
Brutally honest article...! Hats off sir.
@faraz: For once there is some one who actually knows the real problems of Pakistan.... Best of luck brother... Seems you are one among those who really is nationalistic and actually cares for normal people of your country....
As always, a brave and true piece. My salute to you, Sir!
most incisive! Sir may God be with you
"Hypocrites, to boot" - Befitting caption..
Hats off to you, KS, for this very bold and incisive article. We need more 'Muckrakers' like you exposing the 'McCarthyism'and the shananigans of the deep state. Keep it up. May God bless you and keep you safe. We need you.
First time in a long time I agree with you 100%. Innocent till proven guilty, Habeas Corpus, No Extra judicial killing, NO torture. No more killing and dumping, No more Missing persons.
Any of the boys might as well be innocent. Imagine some one in your family being picked up and disappearing. Spending years in a hole only to be shot unceremoniously in a cold unforgiving place... ISI T wing and FC Fusion squads must go, they have become animals. Much like the Contras, Phalangist,UNITA,32 Battalion ,AAA became under imperial tutelage.
Our very own dirty war...
We live in a Dictated Democracy where our elected Prime Minster is the leader of the Opposition.
And the touts of deep state once again making the powerless elected leaders of Pakistan. How can these people ask the leaders to control the establishment when they have seen what happened to HH, BB and ZAB? After so many dead bodies, PPP has learned to be compliant. The power of mullah/military/judiciary alliance is ruthless as can be seen in this Op Ed and Balochistan. The elected govt cannot fire a defense sec. or any general (who get automatic extensions at will) how can they control the whole setup. Sharif tried once, what happened to him?
@Falcon: I agree with your viewpoint that issues should be viwed holistically. But do not see a civilian role in the 1971 fiasco. The army had been in a charge for a long time at that point. Also if the law of evidence in the coutnry is outdated and unsuited to try and convict terror suspects and this is what is driving such strong arm extra judicial tactics, should they not bring to the ciovilian government's attention the exact gaps and the needed changes in the laws so that they can legislate that?
Sir I appreciate the way you write, what a great Piece for the generation who are brought upamidst hatred and killings, Eyeope
@ Parvez our chief Justice take sou motto if govt simply sneezes but he could not see what havoc our agencies unleashed on poor people, why not media anchor remind C J that he promised relatives of missing ppl that he will take up this case after assuming to power again as chief justice, he took up same case after four long years, because he was busy in haunting govt. This case actually opened again, just to fool public, look if I can make PM come to court, army also pays attention to my orders, just to gain some sympathies of public, Shame on him he did not hold any army or agencies personnel, responsible for the crime. People of Sindh are closely watching C J and his drama. He may fool those who hate PPP but not all.
Thank you for a very courageous article. I agree.
For those with powers who cannot be held accountable, Loot is okay. Shoot if you have to kill. But please don't torture humans in your custody.
@Parvez: The politcians in Pakistan are powerless against the agencies because of repeated coups by the military. It is your's, mine and everyone else's job to make democracy strong in our country, give the politicians the power to rein in these elements and then (most importantly), make them accountable. Only then will the politicians be able to exercise their authority.
@ Falcon and Parvez - Thank you guys for throwing in some balance to KS column.
@KS - Is our Parliament, who we are constantly told is "supreme", useless, toothless and spineless to take any action? Sir, if your hapless people have risen one and all and your deep state had acted against Bhutto when he shouted "idhar hum, uther tum" and even later when he "dismissed the legitimate governments of ANP" we would not be where we are today. All of those who work in the media owe it to their country to be honest in their comment.
Why we, Pakistanis, cannot be truthful and honest?
Please write truthfully exploring the history of this tragedy-comedy rooted essentially in (1)ZAB’s actions of the 70s, (2) Musharraf’s creation of MMA and what are the possible solutions today given that a- we have anti Pakistan elements in Afghanistan and also elsewhere who are supporting and encouraging the angry Baloch b- we have our own silly policies which are garnishing disaffection among the Baloch
Very well written Mr KS and credit to EK for carrying it on.These are hard facts and no one can deny it. But as pointed out earlier by some one you can not ignore the follies of civilian governments in Baluchistan case. It was ZA Bhutto whose act of removal of legitimate Bloch government provided the fuel to this sleeping case. One Gen Zia pacified it and again it propped up in Gen Musharraf era. Murder of Bugatti was the climax. As you know current Bloch government was made to win the election with the help of agencies but never ever PP led government tried to dislodge it. Justice delayed is justice denied. No one can exist on empty promises. Acts speak louder than words. If Mr Zardari and PM, for their survival, can face the military brass and supreme court then can stand up for the cause of Baluchistan also. So along with agencies civil government is also guilty and some times you have to take its class also as it is the incompetence of civil government which has resulted in grant of unlimited power to these agencies.
It doesn't matter what the offense - the ISI acts with impunity and the people of Pakistan don't seem to care. Perhaps you have gotten what you deserve?
Agreed, and I no fan of the military, but the entire elite treats masses in similar manner. Army is not unique in this approach. Feudal of interior Sindh and Southern Punjab have enslaved millions of peasant; many of whom live and die in captivity. Every day dozens of peasants are released through court order, but strangely there is no punishment for keeping slave labor. Brick kiln owners use bonded labor. Tribal sardars in Baluchistan openly and proudly take responsibility of murder. Religious parties and mullahs are involved in sectarian killings and terrorism. Ethno linguistic parties are involved in thousands of target killings. Every day you hear of people dying under police custody. You can give few thousand rupees to a police inspector and have a poor man severely tortured. 100,000 people die each year from diseases related to unclean water. Rich don’t pay income tax while poor are made to pay sales tax. The politicians emerge from the same corrupt and cruel elite. The entire society has been brutalized; you can’t single out any one institution or segment of population.
Shafi Sahib,
Your article sent a cold shiver down my spine. How could we do this to our fellow citizens, May God Protect you and keep you in his Safety, you are one of the handful Journalists in Pakistan who have the courage to write the truth about the deep state.
Even though I don't support armed forces for their mistakes, but please spare me the drama. Its true what they have done to prisoners should not be tolerated but you fail to look at failures of civilians altogether. Was East Pakistan truly the orphan child that was badly handled by establishment? Sorry. Civilians were as much responsible for marginalizing Bengalis. Now for Balochistan, may I ask how much have civilian governments spent on development of the region that actually got to grass root levels??...For terrors suspects, may I ask who releases them because of 'lack of evidence'? Which deep state has stopped agriculturists making up 65% of the population to evade taxes??? Army at the end of the day is a hard-core nationalist institution...saying generals have sold their souls might be believable...but making these statements across the board about rank and file of armed forces is shallow analysis to say the least...there is also a flip side of the equation...which is the historical victims of suicide bombings of the very terror suspects you are defending...and there are many more...would you care to write about their families as well??? I am not saying what is happening is correct...all I am saying is their failures at multiple points in the system and you have just resorted to rhetoric rather than looking at issues holistically.
The establishment has done its best to implement, protect , preserve and promote the 2-nation theory as given to it by the founder of Pakistan.
Dear KS Sahib, I am proud of your honesty and patriotism. Nothing can be said to condemn the atrocities of the deep state in East Pakistan, Balochistan and now in KPK. Shame is the only word that comes to mind.
The powers that be are busy landgradding and then setting up shopping plazas, why would they care for the law of the land? See http://www.dawn.com/2012/02/16/ministry-asked-to-compensate-owners-of-land-encroached-by-isi-2.html
