The Lahore High Court on Wednesday ordered the police to register a case against a sub-inspector for illegally detaining and torturing a citizen.
The detainee’s lawyer filed a habeas corpus petition stating that Sub-Inspector Muhammad Sarwar of Kahna police had illegally detained his client Iftikhar Ahmad and tortured him. After recording the initial arguments in the morning, Justice Mazhar Iqbal Sidhu directed a bailiff to produce the detainee.
The bailiff produced Ahmad before the court after recovering him from Kahna police station, where there was no case registered against him.
The court ordered sub-inspector Sarwar arrested and summoned Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ghulam Mahmood Dogar to explain the incident.
DIG Dogar appeared at noon and assured Judge Sidhu that strict action would be taken against sub-inspector Sarwar.
Judge Sidhu released the sub-inspector from court custody and directed the DIG to take action against him within two weeks.
