KARACHI:

National champion Mehmood Lodhi lost a close encounter to Iranian Mousavi Jad Sajad in the sixth round of the Fedrowsi and Khyam International Chess Open underway in Mashhad.

Lodhi, who started his campaign as the 14th-ranked player and won his opening match, went down by half a point. After his first-round win, Lodhi drew his second match before losing the third. Two more draws in the fourth and fifth round saw his ranking dip before another loss further diminished his chances of a good finish at the tournament.

The 11-round tournament features 169 other players vying for a prize money of $5,000 and will conclude on February 20.
