Pakistan’s pair of Aisamul Haq Qureshi and Aqeel Khan, who went into the tie all-square at 1-1, defeated Patrick Chucri and Bassam Beidas after a long battle to put their side in front with just the reverse singles to go.
Earlier, Aisam beat Karim Alayli, while Aqeel lost to Beidas on the opening day. With Pakistan’s hopes resting on the outcome of the doubles match, the duo took the first set comfortably but was broken three times in the second. Aisam and Aqeel hit back straight away to seal the result which also marked Aisam’s 50th win in Davis Cup.
“It’s a boost for us and we’re still relying on the duo to help us win 3-1,” coach and non-playing captain Rashid Malik told The Express Tribune. “It was a phenomenal doubles match. It was extra special because we were due to play in Pakistan and, after losing the home advantage, we played on the opponent’s choice of surface and still came out winners.
“Taking the lead is an achievement. The Lebanese players are also experienced and it became a battle of nerves in the end.”
In the reverse singles today, Aisam will take on Beidas while Aqeel will face Alayli.
If Pakistan manage to beat Lebanon, they will take on Philippines in the second round scheduled to take place in April.
