Steel Mills through to Gold Cup semis

KARACHI: Powered by Shabbir Ahmed brace, Habib Bank Limited (HBL) beat Ghana 3-1 while Pakistan Steel Mills drew 1-1 with Pakistan Customs in pool B matches as both teams cruised into the semi-final of the Quaid-i-Azam Gold Cup Hockey Tournament.

Shabbir Ahmed opened the account for his side in the ninth minute as HBL ended half-time with a 1-0 lead. Ejaz Rasool then scored in the 54th minute as HBL looked well set to secure maximum points. However, Ghana’s Ebeneger Frim Pong scored a few seconds later to give his team some hope but to no avail as HBL scored their third goal in the 67th minute, courtesy of Ahmed, to seal victory.

Steel Mills draw with customs

In the other match, Steel Mills’ Shahbaz Ahmed scored a goal in the 34th minute to give his side a 1-0 lead at half-time. But Customs’ Mohammad Usman struck an equaliser in the 69th minute as the match ended as a thrilling draw.

HBL take on Wapda in the semi-final today while Steel Mills face pool A leaders National Bank of Pakistan in the other last-four match.
