Fernando Gonzalez, the former world number five and triple Olympic-medallist, announced that he would retire after the Miami Masters in March.
The 31-year-old has struggled with fitness since a hip surgery in 2010 and dropped to 268 in the world rankings. “These have been very hard months for me, during which I realised I don’t have the energy I need nor am I prepared to do all I have to do to be where I want to be,” said Gonzalez.
Arguably Chile’s most successful player with 11 tour titles, Gonzalez reached number five in January 2007. He won a gold medal in doubles and bronze in singles at the 2004 Athens Olympics, as well as silver in singles at Beijing four years later.
