Zaman out of junior world championship

KARACHI: Pakistan’s lone hope Farhan Zaman went down in straight sets 11-2, 11-4, 11-8 to Egypt’s Ali Farag in the singles semi-final of the Men’s World Junior Squash Championship.

The second-seed Farag only took 23 minutes as he outplayed Zaman in a comfortable win over the Pakistani.

The 18-year-old from Peshawar - the only non-Egyptian player in the last-four -defeated Mohamed El Sherbini 12-10, 11-9 8-11, 11-7 in the quarter-final. But Faraq knocked out Zaman to ensure that the all-Egyptian final. Farag will face the top-seed Arm Khaled Khalifa, who earlier defeated countryman Marwan El Shorbagy 11-6, 11-1, 11-13, 9-11, 11-4 in a 74-minute match.

Meanwhile, Pakistan will start its title defence in the team event today as the second seed of the tournament along with top-seed Egypt with UK following on third among 24 countries participating in the championship.

The teams are divided into eight groups of two with Pakistan facing South Africa in two matches today in their Pool B match.
