The firing took place in Mian Khan locality of Nasirbagh police station according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tahir Ayub. He said there were a group of outlaws who had opened fire on the police van. As a result Nazakat Khan, Station House Officer (SHO) of Nasirbagh was seriously injured.
A passerby, identified as Muzammil, caught in the crossfire, succumbed to his injuries while he was being rushed to the hospital, officials confirmed.
Nasirbagh is located on the outskirts of the provincial capital where police officials patrol on a routine check for security purposes.
Officials at the Lady Reading Hospital, where the injured police officials had been shifted, told The Express Tribune that the SHO Nazakat Khan had been admitted to the Neurosurgery ward after suffering severe head injuries. Police said that Nazakat had received two bullet injuries in the head.
After the incident a large number of police officials reached the spot and engaged the assailants. However, the culprits managed to escape. A search operation has been launched in the Nasirbagh area to arrest the culprits. However, police said that no arrests had so far been made.
