20th amendment: PML-N, PPP agree terms for new Chief Election Commissioner
Deadlock remains on make up of caretaker government.
ISLAMABAD:
Some progress has been made between the government and the Opposition on preconditions for the 20th amendment with the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) finally conceding some ground, said Opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar outside the parliament on Tuesday.
He said that all parties wanted a free and independent Election Commission and that the previous deadlock had been resolved after the government conceded some ground on the Chief Election Commissioner.
“We have agreed about the new Chief Election Commissioner, that no extension can be given to the Commissioner under the constitution, this was clear in the 18th amendment,” Nisar said.
He added that with one sticking point resolved, the next deadlock was on the make up of the caretaker cabinet which will take over reigns for a limited period of time between the end of term of the current government and before the new assembly is sworn in.
Talks continue: Could caretakers present budget?
Negotiations between Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) earlier saw a wide range of topics discussed, according to various sources privy to the talks.
One of the more interesting topics is when to set up the caretaker government.
