Security to be beefed up at Karachi Fish Harbour

KARACHI: The Government of Sindh and Karachi Fisheries Harbour Authority (KFHA) have decided to step up security measures in the wake of deteriorating law and order at the Karachi Fish Harbour.

This was decided in a meeting between the Sindh Minister for Fisheries Zahid Ali Bhurgari and a delegation of Pakistan Fisheries Exporters Association (PFEA) at the Karachi Fish Harbour on Saturday. The meeting reviewed law and order situation and discussed steps that can be taken to curb incidents of robbery or extortion at the harbour.

The PFEA delegation expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation and demanded high security measures at the harbour. They also set a condition that they would only resume their business activities in the coming fishing season when the provincial government or the KFHA guaranteed them adequate security.

Town Police Officer informed the meeting that his team was closely monitoring the situation at the fish harbour and therefore the crime rate had decreased to some extent. He assured the seafood exporters of full cooperation and support.

The minister directed KFHA officials to bring some drastic improvements in the internal security system. He appealed to the exporters that they should resume their business activities at the beginning of the new fishing season as the KFHA would be responsible for internal security.

The PFEA delegation was headed by Faisal Iftikhar while the meeting was also attended by the town police officer, deputy superintendent of police, director administration and finance KFHA, director operations, administrator Fishermen’s Cooperative Society and fish traders.
