KARACHI:

Karachi Commissioner Roshan Ali Sheikh has directed the officials of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to remove encroachments at the front of Empress Market.

He said that removing the makeshift stalls from the sidewalk was part of a larger drive to clear the roads which stayed choked for hours because of illegal businesses, said Sheikh. He visited the market earlier in the day.

“I asked KMC, the Karachi Cantonment Board and the traffic DIG to come up with a proper plan for dealing with this problem,” said Sheikh. “The cars and motorcycles parked everywhere will have to use the parking plaza then.”

Sheikh has also asked the Karachi cantonment board to maintain cleanliness in its part of Saddar. “If any authority claims jurisdiction over some area then it should also take responsibility for its cleanliness,” he said.
