Chess: Akram outplays Lodhi to clinch title

KARACHI: Third-seed Wasim Akram registered stunning victories over favourites Mehmood Lodhi and Tanveer Gillani to clinch the Pakistan Chess players Association Zahiruddin Trophy. Akram won seven out of the eight matches he played during the event, accumulating seven points. Meanwhile, Lodhi finished in second place with 6.5 points, while Faraz Saleem secured the third position. “It’s my first national title and it means a lot because the best players of the country were here,” Akram told The Express Tribune. “Defeating Lodhi is something I’m very proud of. He has kept the national title for a decade now.”
