The creators of a locally-based, ‘Islamic’ social networking website launched in 2010 have called on Muslims to delete their accounts on the “blasphemous” Facebook and switch to Millat Facebook.

Speaking at a conference on the topic ‘Blasphemy by Facebook and Role of Muslim Youth in Social Media’, MFB founder and CEO Umar Zaheer Mir said that world’s biggest social networking website had hurt millions of Muslims when it hosted a competition of blasphemous drawings in 2010.

Mir said that all Muslims should delete their Facebook accounts and switch to MFB to strengthen Islam and guard the Holy Prophet’s (peace be upon him) honour. This suggestion was later endorsed by the participants at the conference in the form of a resolution, which also demanded that the government ban all websites that offended religious sentiments.

Mir said Muslims were not against the use of modern technology, but against its misuse. He said liberty did not mean having the freedom to hurt others’ feelings. He said they had launched MFP just two days after the Lahore High Court had temporarily banned Facebook in 2010.

Asked why he was accusing Facebook of blasphemy now when the site had not hosted blasphemous caricatures and almost two years after the competition, Mir told The Express Tribune that their opposition to the website would continue.

“First, it is almost Eid Miladun Nabi. Secondly, Facebook is about to launch its initial public offering (IPO) soon and we want to send them a message, that we will be there at every step to counter it,” he said.

He said MFB had registered 300,000 users within 10 days of launching and now had 500,000 users. “MFB has more features than Facebook. All Muslims should not only use it but also delete their accounts on Facebook,” he said, adding that MFB was a non-commercial website dedicated to Islam. “We are spending about Rs3.5 million per annum running the site but we are not taking donations or hosting ads,” he said.

He said MFB was being supported by Global IT Vision, a software house and IT consultancy. Global IT Vision was behind recent advertisement campaigns for Tehreek-i-Insaf in which residents of Lahore and Karachi received voice messages from Imran Khan inviting them to party rallies.

Other prominent participants in the conference included Advocate Waleed Iqbal, son of Dr Javed Iqbal, PTI Secretary General Ijaz Chaudhry, Mufti Muhammad Khan Qadri, Vice Admiral (r) Javed Iqbal and Advocate Muhammad Azhar Siddique.

Mufti Qadri said the linking of Islam with terrorism and extremism was a conspiracy against a peaceful religion. He said Facebook had deliberately provoked Muslims by hosting the blasphemous caricatures competition. He said the United Nations should take action against Facebook.

Advocate Iqbal said he was in favour of the use of modern technology, but within limits.

Ijaz Chaudhry said Muslims should play their role to protect the Holy Prophet’s (pbuh) honour. He said all political parties should contribute in this regard. He appreciated MFB and its team.

Siddique said Facebook had hurt millions of Muslims by declaring blasphemy as allowed under the right to freedom of expression.

On May 19, 2010, the LHC banned Facebook from being accessed in Pakistan, after Siddique filed a petition accusing it of hosting the blasphemous caricatures competition. MFB was launched on May 25, 2010. Five days later, the ban on Facebook was lifted. The site had over six million registered users in Pakistan as of February 2012.

Published in The Express Tribune, February 5th, 2012.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly mentioned Waleed Iqbal as Dr Javed Iqbal’s grandson. The error has been rectified.

Someone tell this guy he doesn’t have the money or the code to run a website with even few hundred thousand users.

And also please ask him what Islam says regarding lying. He does that right on his homepage

“Millatfacebook – MFB – Meet Over 1.6 Billion Muslims and Peaceful people helps you connect and share with the people in your life.” Facebook has 800 Million users so millatfacebook is bigger?

  • Feb 5, 2012 - 5:56AM

Why facebook only?? We should also boycott google, boycott youtube, boycott wikipedia, boycott everything which connects us with the world.
Actually, the whole world has become a blasphemous place.
Let’s go to the caves and live a peaceful life there.

Have you requested mumtaz Quadri to be part of MFB?

  • Feb 5, 2012 - 10:41AM

    Dear Mr Mir,

Your product Millat Facebook is just a rubbish clone of Facebook, there are many such sites available on the internet. There is nothing innovative, nothing original about it.

Now having said that I would like request you to stop playing ‘the religious card” to attract users. Calling Facebook anti Islamic would not help you much and you guys should realize this by now. You should give need to your own stats. You added 200000 users in the first 10 days of your launch and then in next two complete years just added 300000 users, that’s a failure.

Now I suggest either you make your own Google, Twitter and Microsoft for Muslims or just stop fooling people by preaching Islamic mantra of your MFB.

    No offence.

Facebook provides users with the opportunity to express their true feelings and thoughts. It is used by upto a billion users. There will be some crack heads in that number too, but the goal isn’t to run away scared but to counter those with your beliefs and thoughts with discussions and enlightenment. Ussing religion to sell your product is a very sad thing to do. There are many morally Ill things on the net. Does that mean we stop using the Internet? The logic behind your product might appeal to the average extremist, but many of us have friends who are not Muslims too. They are good sensible god loving people. Learn to respect others and you will be respected too ..

Coz they see appologists like some commenting here

A silent majority is with MFB as no other network by Muslims ever could get half million users & to another fb troll FB only had 8500 users is 2 years ;) with all its cia backing and funding so praise these guys for the effort checkout MFB it has evolved & now up for almost 2 years

If we look purely from a security point of view, it gives the US government under the patriot act , access to all the profiles of every single user on facebook.
This is probably the biggest intelligence tool in the world, that is hosted on a us company.

It for this reason I am for people to stop relying on facebook and switch to other social networks that are not us based.

This is a joke. Everything about this website and it’s creators shout cliches. Seriously, why is this even a news?

And for record, if the entire percentage of Pakistanis who have access to computers stop using fb, it would not put even a tiny dent on it’s revenues (because fb rely on ads and Pakistanis don’t buy anything on the internet). And with fb gone public, Pakistan’s relevance to FB growth is almost negligible. Mir is clearly living in it’s own little world.

And why just restrict MillatFB to Muslims, i say lets invite everyone globally and make FB cry like a baby and they will succumb to our knees. Who knows one day MillatFB will accommodate a small company like facebook in its wings.

First of all, If you want to counter facebook than better to come up with such innovation, technology and theme that facebook is not offering to its users and then market it with a solid name (no need to use facebook as a suffix).

It is that only way that can convince the people to come to your website.

However, if science clashes with the nature then it causes devastation. similarly, use of science to cause any harm or heart burning to any human being then this sorts of sceientific developments or inventions should be condemned. As the facebook causing heart buring for millions of Muslims then it should be condemned and abondoned if somebody feels so.

From your name you sound like a Muslim but may be i am wrong. The biggest problem of Muslim these days is that they won’t even look at the products designed by their fellow Muslims and consider it a “clone” or a “failure”,it is surely the inferiority complex in their minds that make them think so!And if we look at the innovative part then nothing in this world is innovative it can’t be.As all the cars, machines or even search engines, their basic essence is same, their purpose is same and somehow their design is a bit same too so they all are clones and are noting is original,if I see under your concept.millatfacebook’s purpose of launching is just to avenge the ridicules event carried down by fb and that’s why many people and even now non Muslims are joining it as they do not support the partial behavior of fb’s admin. What a joke!!! as compared to fb’s earlier years millatfacebook is doing 100000 times better.Go and have a look at YOUR FACEBOOK earlier graphs it hardly had members until 2005 and it was launched in 1997.

Hi My Muslim brothers and sisters,
I agree with most that facebook sucks, their is media hype arroud facebook in Europe but truely our muslim social media sites are not that limited in their exposure. We in Scandinavia and Europe are proud of websites like http://www.muxlim.com. But in all this we have to remember that any site cant run just on one single good idea, muxlim.com closed down due to financial difficulties on other hand the revenue of Facebook is the best. if we muslims cant promote the websites which are our own creation then the fate is the same like muxlim.com . Mohhammed El Fatatry earn the presidential award for this innovation in Finland. We muslims are 1 billion in wolrd but sadly we dont promote our stuff, we scroll to western media sites but cant look the effort of our own. Please please support good works of our muslim media, today if we are posting comments greatly thankful to tribune.com.pk or dawn.com is purely we support their work, on comparison they might lack the touch western media has but still bravo they doing good job (tribune.com.pk & dawn.com).
I met Mohhammed El Fatatry in Helsinki, his only grief was that he did not had enough advertisment like facebook, or others. Just imagine if tribune closes its web page one day, who we will blame it for answer is “WE”. We need promote them by advertisment, and so on.”QUOTE”
Muxlim is the brainchild of Mohammed El-Fatatry who moved to Finland in 2004 from the United Arab Emirates. Since that time he’s become a symbol of the supposed success of Finland’s multicultural project. El-Fatatry isn’t giving up too many details as to why the project failed.

Facebook is a sort of a “soft power” for America. Each user is an asset in social media. Too much power lays in the hands of too few. This site could be a great alternative or power projection for Pakistan and the Islamic world.

I just don’t like the premise of making it exclusive for Muslims. The better thing to do would be to make all-inclusive of all faiths but follows the spirit of Islam by not allowing any derogatory comments about ANY religion thus making it a safe family site for members of all faiths. Exclusivity only ensures your demise.

This would show the good principle of Islam to all aside from the economic and influential benefits.
Marketing the site in this manner may attract investment and resources.

At least be original with your idea. Stealing name, logo and concept does not give you any credibility or authenticity. Surrounding yourself with Jahadist and religious zealots for feel good purpose is cheap publicity stunt. The first 2 groups in the results of the search have a total of over 1million members. Does that mean that they are not real Muslims? It is not mentioned in Quran and Hadith that switching to MFB will strengthen Islam and safeguard Muhammad S.A.W.W honor and dignity. This guy is emotionally blackmailing Muslims, to which we are always accustomed and using cheap ways to promote his site. How long we will use Islam for our personal greedy gains and dirty policitics.Recommend

Go and have a look before you crack this joke that millatfacebook has stolen any idea hahhaha It has much more features than that crap facebook and the base of everything which is created for one purpose has to be same. It’s like you are saying i am not buying a certain perfume bottle because it stole the idea of another perfume company,as their purpose and looks will somehow be the same. So,for you it will be the “COPYRIGHT ISSUES”probably!

    @ Dakota
My Muslim fellow, facebook did ridicule Prophet Mohammad salla-la-ho-aleh-i-wasllam.Yes you are right the users did organize a blasphemous competition of caricatures of Prophet salla-la-ho-aleh-i-wasllam(Nauzobillah)but according to FACEBOOK policy they should have deleted the page but they did not .In fact in one of interviews of MARK ZUCKERBERG(CEO OF THAT CRAP FACEBOOK) said that he would support that event!Where as any page with harsh speech or even a slight argument on hitter or Zionists would be deleted in mere seconds or even an insult to other religions would not be tolerated then why on earth is he attacking ISLAM is he mentally retarted?Being ceo of such a big site he should have shown some responsibility but now he really became the one who insulted our Islam & Prophet Mohammad salla-la-ho-aleh-i-wasllam ,& Muslims can bear anything but not this! And yes i would advise you not to judge other’s intentions as only ALLAH alone knows what is in the hearts of others so before pointing out others at least have a look at yourself :)

    @ let there be peace

If giving rights to women,if declaring men and women are equal,if telling everyone(be it rich or poor) is equal,if helping poor and weak by charity and other means,if defending your religion(in the era when people can go till any extent just to avenge the one who abused them)is a part of “IMAGINARY” or “VIRTUAL” world in your sight(that too created by Muslims “specifically”.Then God knows where do you belong!

    Feb 6, 2012 - 7:37PM

    @ Frantic
How “ironically ridiculous” is this that people today can even kill another person if they abuse them or their family(no wonder what will happen if they hear about a dirty picture competition held by some person of them and their family)they can go till any extent to make sure other person has learnt their lesson but when it’s about religion ohh it’s such a small thing why bother?right?to sum it up it is called “HYPOCRISY” and its a disease in the hearts of such people!

I planned initially to support this site by joining it, but they isolated themselves from people of other religions going Islamic, if they would have said. a meeting place of tolerant and respectfull people free of bias, then I would have supported it more.
Even then i kept my account on the site. but once I tried to search my name on google, the profile of mfb was on the first page results, and upon clicking the page, I was shocked to see a banner praising the killer qadri, on my profile page, that was the last nail in the coffin , I straight way signed in and deleted my account, but somehow it was not deleting, so I changed my name and email address to a dummy one, hence removing all references of that profile to me.

May Allah bestow u persistence . Keep it up ! All MFBians are with u.

MFB is Militant facebook because it is against blasphemy and asking muslims to unite.
What about fb that blasphemes Prophet peace be upon him???
That must be peacebook for you.

    Feb 8, 2012 - 8:40PM

    @ Saleem Khan
You don’t know why people are so conservative & narrow minded???
ah & i don’t why people have such dual standards that if your loved ones were mocked & ridiculed by anyone and the other person is not even ashamed no matter what even then will you actually meet up that person.NO!!today even someone hurdle abuses at anyone the other person does not spare him so when he is making your fun is insulting you will you actually leave him no!!but of course it’s not about ourselves..you know one can only be Muslim if Prophet Mohammad (salla-la-ho-aleh-i-wasllam) is drearer to him than anything and anyone so why people are sleeping now why are they not taking revenge for his insult??for the blasphemous competition that was held & MARK ZUCKERBERG,CEO OF THAT FACEBOOK,himself supported it & still supporting rather than taking any action.
& you people are high on talks leave this..leave that!who on earth said you to leave something it’s only that crap site that is ridiculing our Prophet Mohammad (salla-la-ho-aleh-i-wasllam) & if you cannot do something at least don’t blame the people who are actually trying to avenge the attack on Prophet Mohammad (salla-la-ho-aleh-i-wasllam)’s dignity and this proves that you have a small and narrow mind as you think that only EUROPEAN things can be of some quality shame on such people who rather than supporting fellow muslims are critizing them for nothing facebook is constaly spying and piercing others data this news has been out since many years & it’s name has facebook in it as it was launched only to challenge its identity and prove it that Muslims and decent people of other faiths would not support the ridicules act by facebook but as Quran says they cannot see as they are blind neither can they hear as they are deaf!!!Recommend

    Why call it “Facebook”?

Good question. Actually it is called millatfacebook and that’s because just like a picture conveys more than a thousand words, it conveys, without speaking a single word what we are about which is: “the rival and alternate Facebook created by Muslims for all the decent people of all faiths to come together and interact in a socially responsible and considerate manner.”
And we are not against Facebook name but the hate-mongering, Islamophobic and anti-humane policies of the Facebook administration.

    An answer by MFB team.

when Indian court sent notices to facebook for blasphemous stuff then nobody called them extremist. Now a Pakistani is doing something alternative then everyone has an issue. we are sooo blinded by media that we are now even worst then indians. Even they have ghairat for their religion except Pakistani Muslims.

  • Feb 9, 2012 - 12:12PM

    Ridiculous indeed!
for your kind information the private photos of fb Founder Mark zuckerberg were hacked and were published online on Dec. 7 2011.
He who can’t protect his OWN data on his OWN facebook will protect your data???

forbes magazine stated in its statement about Mark
“what CIA has not done in 60 years,Mark has done in 7”

And if can’t do anything good, you don’t have the right to blame others ruthlessly.

  • Feb 9, 2012 - 12:50PM

    @Pakistani Hindu
I think caves also exist on the earth or perhaps they have shifted to Mars?

Well, any decent person would never like to go where the most revered personality and the saviour of Humanity Peace be upon him is being abused and insulted.

  • Feb 9, 2012 - 1:22PM

    @shoaib khan
    Correct please!
MFB added 300,000 users in 10 days and now has more than 500,000.
MFB is ONLY 1.5 years old as compared to fb thats 8 years old.

you would have not said MFB a clone,if you really have known the meaning of “clone”.

MFB has additional features than fb e.g shout box, public chatrooms, recipies e.t.c.

If someone is asking Muslims to unite and boycott that platform which is blaspheming Prophet peace be upon him,he’s using religious card.

Don’t blame if you can’t do anything!
