Government to establish five companies

ISLAMABAD: Five new power distribution companies are being established as part of the government’s plan to double the number of electricity supplying corporations in Pakistan.

Sources said that one of these companies, the Sukkur Electric Supply Company (Sesco), will start operating from August 14 while the Tribal Area Electric Supply Company has been formed but awaits funds promised by international donors to start operations.

The government plans to set up three more power distribution companies at Mardan, Bahawalpur and Quetta.

The objective of establishing these corporations is to enable better monitoring of electricity supply. This will curb the wastage of electricity by reducing line losses. Meanwhile, the corporations will also help improve the supply of electricity in and around these areas.

The funds required for establishing these power distribution companies are being provided by the Asian Development Bank. It was learnt that the government is also talking to other international financial institutions for backing these projects.

As part of the plan, new grid stations will be set up along with additional transmission lines. New electric meters and time-of-use meters will also be installed to deal with the problem of electricity theft.
