There have been stories aplenty about extremist elements publicly punishing men who groom their facial hair in the far-flung tribal badlands of Pakistan.
However, the practice has now been reported a little closer to home: At a school in Peshawar, where the institution’s administration suspended a student for trimming his beard too fine – or, to be more precise, for getting an “English cut”.
The school’s administration has denied expelling the student – claiming that the boy’s father himself pulled his son out after submitting an application.
Mohammad Sharif, a resident of the Saeedabad locality of the provincial capital, told The Express Tribune that his son Hafiz Mohammad Hamza – a student of class 9 at the Iqra Huffaz School and College, Warsak Road, Peshawar – was suspended on October 4, 2011.
“When I asked my son why he was suspended, he replied that ‘I trimmed my beard a bit fine by mistake due to which the administration asked me not to attend school for eight days.’”
Sharif said that the next day he sent his son to school, but received a call from him asking to be picked up, as he was not being allowed to enter the class.
“When I got there, my son was sitting outside the class. Upon approaching the principal, I was told that my son had trimmed his beard, and that whoever does so will not be allowed inside the school.”
He said he revisited the school two days later and approached another teacher, submitting an application asking to allow his son to attend the class. However, the principal seized him by the hand and led him out of the office after tearing up the application.
Sharif said he has also approached the school’s administration in Karachi, but they too questioned him on his son’s actions. He noted that his son had not shaved his beard, rather, had only trimmed it, adding that “he never used a blade.”
He said the school had not informed him about any such rules beforehand and that his son had been studying at the school for more than 10 years. “I took my son to several other schools, but for the past few months he is languishing at home wasting time because of the school’s behaviour.”
And then he asked the question: “Is it lawful to deny education to someone over such an issue?”
A notice issued by the school, dated October 4, 2011, and available with The Express Tribune, states that “Muhammad Hamza, son of Muhammad Sharif, of class 9 D, has been suspended with immediate effect for cutting his beard and violating rules.”
An official of the school, Maulana Israr Rahim, said a beard was part of the school’s uniform and that every student and parent signs an affidavit declaring that they will abide by the school rules. “We have their signatures on the document. He has clearly violated the rules by getting an English cut.”
He said that they had not expelled him from the school, but rather suspended him till he corrects his mistake. He said that it was the student’s father who had quarrelled with the staff and submitted an application and pulled him out.
“We are ready to take the child back if his father apologises to the administration and assures them of not repeating the mistake in the future.”

@Pakistan Jeevay: What is your argument here?
@all To me it it mere 'jahalat', stupidity and ignorance of the teachings of Islam. the prophet (pbuh) used to wear Aba, never used shampoo, did not brush his teeth with paste, did not use a pressure cooker, and there are other thousand things that were not available at that time, so we must do those too...
On the contrary that lessons that he gave us honesty, discipline, education etc do not mean anything to us.
We are right on track. The track of destruction.
During my school days I have seen School enforcing certain hair cut (so-called fogie cut?) , I know certain schools asking students to adhere to certain grooming habits. discussion should be should school have say what a student does to his/her body? not just beard
It is not the schools job to interfere with the students haircuts/facial hair. It is a personal preference (myself thinks that beards look awful but that is my opinion).
Lets ignore the stupid debate if a beard makes a person "momin" or not.
however, to be fair and balanced, should those schools also be negatively projected that latently force their students to shave? There are quite a few in Lahore that follow these practices, something I know through personal experience.
Is forcing someone not to trim equally bad as forcing them to shave.
On a side (legal) note, if the parents have signed and affidavit with consent that their child would not shave/trim during the tenure of his studentship doesn't it make it the parent's fault for having signed such a contract (worse yet if the parents didn't read the agreement before)?
Any rational and non-sentimental responses to the above questions?
@Zaid Hamid To become a Mard-E-Momin All you need is a A BEARD Does not metter what ever you hve behind the beard.
The goat has beard too does that make it mard-e-momin ? i guess abu jehel too had beard , so was he a mard e momin too ?
Fruits of Musharraf's double game by allowing MMA to win in KP and balochistan in 2002 and seeds of zia ul haq's talibanization
I agree with ahsan.. school teaches discipline and ithis is part of discipline .. In an islamic school it is important to have a beard so be it .... The student should appologize and complete his education ... the problem is schools inability to forgive him ... if thats the case then that is wrong ... BTW et loves to pick up stories ..
There are alot of Students forced to shave at my school ... why don't u pick up that ET ... why don't u ask abt airforce where they forced many to shave ... why not to O A levels schools where principals look down upon those with beard
Its not just about the beard aspect but more about the discipline . Most of our government schools have a very narrow minded approach to discipline... anything out of the ordinary is taken as against school discipline and moral conduct... im pretty sure it was more to do with the administration thinking he was imitating some indian actor... rather than blaming it on religious reasons this issue should surely have been sidelined and ignored... it really IS a very tabloid-ish thing to publish
I dont understand how such irrelevant issues concerns the rest of Pakistan?
ET, stop becoming a tabloid paper
@Zaid Hamid...who writes "The beard is symbol od mard-e-momin. You don’t trim mard-e-momin."
As usual, you are funny! 8/10 for the satire! 2 points taken for writing a longer sentence than the usual!!!
@Pakistan Jeevay
One more very important point...the main purpose of a uniform is to ensure that there's equality among the children as far as their clothing is concerned - rich or poor.
Does the beard serve the same purpose?
Pakistan Jeevay writes...
"Yes. if a student can be expelled for not wearing school’s uniform, then same rules should exist for schools who consider beard to be part of their uniform.
I do not see any wrong being done here."
First of all, students are not expelled from schools for not wearing uniform. They are expelled only if they regularly do not wear uniforms.
Second...a uniform is a uniform. It's defined by clear cut rules. It talks about the colors, it talks about the prints on the clothes.
How can you define a beard? Can you define the length of the beard? What if some students don't get facial hair? What is some students grow hair faster on their faces?
Is that uniform?
cant be compulsory
Are children born with beards in NWFP?
class 9 boy has to maintain a beard? That's so wierd! Most people i know dont even start developing facial hair when they are in class 9!
easy solution....buy a fake beard
baseless claim ...The beard is symbol od mard-e-momin. You don’t trim mard-e-momin. ??? what in the world does this mean? this country needs education...enough beards already, no good extremist comments should be deleted... islam mein darhi hei...darhi mein islaam nahi bhai
He should have bought a fake beard from Saddar, 2 for 10 rupees.
The beard is symbol od mard-e-momin. You don't trim mard-e-momin.
Extremism at its peak.! why on earth do u have to force some one to have a beard...? the decision should rest on the individual to have a beard or shave it or trim it..!!
Mashallah Subhanallah The School has taken the right decision. Only 1 problem is that this decision should have been taken 1500 years ago Mashallah.
The right beard is more important than the right education at a Pakistani school. Day by day, Pakistan is descending into medieval obscuration.
A student of class 9 at the Iqra Huffaz School and College was suspended for trimming his beard.
Why on earth does a class 9 boy have a beard - how ridiculous!
Yes. if a student can be expelled for not wearing school's uniform, then same rules should exist for schools who consider beard to be part of their uniform.
I do not see any wrong being done here. Just like how a child born to a poor family is denied his right of high education, same applies here.
