Its manifesto as given in the press is to ‘check army, ISI bashing’ (not the other Services, please note) and that ‘Musharraf be allowed to return to his country ... participate in the elections ... (and) be provided necessary security allowed to any other former president of the country’. We are also told that PFG is affiliated with the Pakistan Ex-Serviceman’s Association (PESA).
Now then, while it is far from clear just how this collection of retired generals is going to ‘check’ what they call ‘army, ISI bashing’ might one point out that the criticism is mainly aimed at their fellow rank-wallahs who give the orders, not poor line officers and soldiers who are sacrificing their young lives in the War against Terror.
So, if they want the criticism to stop, could the retired generals please advise their successors to start with some CBMs. First off, the renunciation of their jihadi ‘assets’ who have brought so much grief to the country already. And who, let’s face it, have made Pakistan a veritable breeding ground of terrorists and therefore have given it a very bad name. The real assets of the country are common, ordinary Pakistanis, not crazed religious zealots.
Next, could they accept once and for all, that the army is but another department of the GOP. A fleeting look at the Indian army chief’s travails next door would help greatly. Could they then stop eye-balling the elected civilian government and trying to stare it down? And last, could they stop ISPR from issuing near-rebellious and insolent statements on behalf of themselves?
Could the retired generals advise those they want to protect to desist from those unsoldierly activities that give the armed forces a very bad name indeed? Such as running shaadi halls and restaurants out of officers messes? In a most disappointing sign, however, it is reported that the shaadi hall in the Mehran Base — yes the very same naval base that was attacked by al Qaeda and in which several costly aircraft were destroyed including the only two serviceable Orion P3-C — is now open for business again!
Such as merchandising mirch masalas and groceries out of CSD shops which at one time only catered to serving and retired armed forces personnel? And letting out portions of officer’s messes to banks and other commercial enterprises? And running bakeries and pastry shops? Why, I found an NLI-run pastry and cake shop located right in Skardu bazaar, and one in Marala Headworks bazaar some years ago.
As for the ISI, it only has to civilise itself, that’s all, to remove the aura of fear that surrounds it. It could make an excellent start by telling us what it has come up with in the investigation into Saleem Shahzad’s brutal beating to death. We recall that soon after the event, a high official whilst denying that the agency had anything to do with it, promised that it would ‘leave no stone unturned’ to find his killers. Well, sirs, how many stones are yet to be unturned?
As for providing ‘necessary’ security for the Commando, the PFG should have rather demanded that it be better than that provided by the Commando’s government to the much missed, much lamented, Benazir Bhutto.
And as for the PFG being allied to PESA, let us recall when Musharraf, showing stark discourtesy to his retired seniors, called PESA a collection of ‘spent cartridges’. It is shameful that now when he needs crutches, him or his fans would even look to ‘spent cartridges’ for support.
Which, be as it may, I would ask his new supporters to look at footage of Musharraf’s jalsa in Karachi. It may yet convince them that the Commando is the wrong horse to back.

@Asad:
PESA on the so-called ‘Pakistan First’ Forum
Members of Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Association (PESA) totally disassociate themselves from the aims and objectives of the recently formed group of some retired military officers under the so-called title of ‘Pakistan First, Forum’. It is strange that most of these officers, who have been closely associated with General Pervez Musharraf in his un-Constitutional acts, are now talking about democracy. PESA stands for supremacy of the Constitution and rule of law. It is, therefore, firm on its original demand for trial of General Musharraf for violation of Article 6 of the Constitution.
As always, extremely well written. Many retired officers turn upside down against the mechanisms of our serving officers. Well, why is it?
@Mirza:
Absolutely. Remember, the mushrooming of mansabdars brought down the Mughals!
Excellent article. One silver lining in our current gloom is the variety and depth of open and critical comment in contemporary Pakistan on the multifarious ways in which our khakis have and continue to hold this country hostage to the outdated security state agenda. Well done Kamran Sahib
@Nadir: "PFG went bust the day it was started. While they were demanding Musharaf’s return, DG ISI saab was off in Dubai telling Zardari to stay put."
I think you meant Musharraf not Zardari
@Farz: Their over loyalty & superiority has broken the country into two. Do you want to break it again into so many pieces?????
Kudos Mr Shafi for your fearless writing. There are only handful of columnists/ writers with the ability to call a spade a spade and without the fear of retribution from the powerful quarters:
Your writings remind me of Faiz' poetry:
"Bol kay lab aazad hain teray..
Please keep writing..
Best wishes
Basically those who couldn't perform their duty of protecting Pakistan are pointing fingers to divert attentions from blunders like GHQ attack, Baluchistan, PNS Mehran.
Great going, do not let anything happen in this country as if current government has done wonders for the poor people. But wait poor people are only for getting votes and for raising TRPs. In whose tenure the poor and the middle class were most in peace ? ? ? ? ? ?
How appropriate PESA! More Paisa is all they are looking for...
No third world country can boast of having hundreds of generals in its army with huge perks. We have more generals than most rich countries in the world. Yet the comman people are not even safe in our cities.
@author. I always love your articles. On this one, however, I would ask whether PFG is even worth discussion?
@American Desi: Read Again: They are retired, so pretty much civilians now
The printers devil! The word I used was not jalsA but jalsI with an i at the end! A jalsA should have more than 3,000 attending!
Ali Tanoli : Your thinking has tanked Author : Excellent article . But the probability of your advice put to action is next to nothing in Pakistan. Let the Army/ISI find out and declare with proof who was behind the killers of Saleem Shazhad. Then one can assume Pak will reverse the course
I think Musharaf should have the distinction of becoming the first General to be tried and brought to justice in pursuance with the law of the land. This is a much delayed balancing act which is needed for a better future of the nation.Other Generals, all 150 of them, will earn nation's gratitude if they also volunteer to submit to a fair process of judicial accountability..
Great work by KS, salute you
@Ali Tanoli: Serving officers will be fired in US if they dabble in politics/ (think tanks). Denial of the rot in the system is the biggest disservice one can do to his own country.
Great Article, Mr. Shafi as always!
Would PFG like to release retirement package of the Generals to the public? That will explain what is happening to this country.
They are trying to defend a murderer. What a moral high for this great group!
@Ali Tanoli: Do you even know what a think tank is?? Shame on these retired generals.
Very pragmatic sound advice. By nature we are a stubborn lot and somehow just lack the necessary quality to even listen to another's point of view, let alone accept it. I sincerely hope I'm wrong.
Kamran Shafi Saheb.!!
My solute to you once again. Keep on writing these courageous columns and I would keep on soluting you sir!!
Bunch of has been trying to stay relevant. Who cares!
PFG went bust the day it was started. While they were demanding Musharaf's return, DG ISI saab was off in Dubai telling Zardari to stay put. And who paid for the 5 star hotel by the way? Werent one of the mess halls good enough for them?
PFG doing the same jobs think tanks does in america. good job PFG and PESA.
